Will Harper Man Up?
The Harper government frankly lacks the guts to stand up to the "human rights" operators, who can count on support from the opposition benches. To their credit, ministers have at least listened patiently to complaints from the victims, and tried to chasten the bureaucracies, discreetly.
This approach is inadequate, however. Free speech is itself an adversarial thing, and the defence of free speech has always required an unhesitating willingness to confront those who would shut it down.
[…]
Against the Iranian Embassy, Harper's ministers have the stomach. That is a start, and all for the good, but if free speech is to be fully restored in this country, the constitutional defenders of it will have to "man up" in a more politically costly way.
Does Harper have the balls for that?

So far definitely NO.

All evidence to date shows the exact opposite. Keep in mind the Crown appealing court decisions ruling against HRC rulings. This cannot be done without government approval and support.

Since Harper is being blackmailed for 5 billion or Que. will pull the pin on the spring budget , I think we will have a election. If we do and he can scrape a majority together the I believe we will see what Harper really wants to do. I think he will dump the HRC by cutting funding to the point where they are neutered.
I know I'm just dreaming but it's such a pleasant dream.

Oh, Harper. I was once so excited about him and his NCC credentials. As it turns out he has been the worst PM in Canadian history. Massive debt and deficit and worst of all, he publicly demonizes freedom and those who persue it. Bring back the man I once despised and only learned to like by comparison to what we have now - Jean Chretien.
