The Minister of Health’s conception of the citizenry

The Minister of Health, Leona Aglukkaq, has declared that the voluntary program for reducing trans fat in Canadian food has failed. Restaurants have not ‘voluntarily’ reduced trans fat in sufficient amounts to satisfy the government. So now the government, having been defied by its subjects, is discussing the possibility of using force to coerce restaurant owners to do as they say.

Of course the mighty and magnanimous state will use the sword only in our protection. The state wishes to save us from the harm that these dastardly business owners are doing to our hearts. How dare they! We the people cry out. How dare they make food that tastes really really good! Punish them, we the masses demand!

No! We did not know. We could not have known that eating at McDonald’s every day would lead to severe health problems. There has never been a well publicized documentary informing us so that we can make responsible choices. It isn’t our fault that we are unhealthy! It is those damn deep frying knaves that are too blame.

Protect us! Oh protect us mighty leviathan. For we the people are ignorant and stupid. Clearly we are incapable of making our own decisions about what we want to put into our bodies.

We are nothing but sheep that must be led and guided by the glorious Sheppard: Leona Aglukkaq Minister of Health.

Just like: "who would have thought that sucking smoke into your lungs every day might do you harm?". This is another example of unnecessary federal duplication of Ministries that exist in every province (and I would do away with those as well.) It's all totally acceptable within an infantilized society.

Beware of government bodies passing laws and regulation "for our own good". The government always makes a very dangerous parent.

And dont forget the "salt abatement" program that is under study. 20 "experts" on government payroll on how to best implement new laws curtailing the use of said product. For our own good of course. Will "save billions in health care". The nanny state marches on. Remember that how food tastes is not a right....it's a privilege. Just wait until they bring out the reports on second hand salt.

And wouldn't you know that the moment you heat the oil to fry something at home that you have converted that oil to a trans fat. Happy chompin'.

Hugh, good post. I wonder how in the world I managed to know trans fats are bad and reduced them in my diet years ago.

Our Healthier Living, you are right I believe about placing a high value on our health. But I wonder if you would impose your beliefs about what is healthy on others.

The US is about to mandate that Nutrition Information tables be on the FRONT of food boxes at grocery stores. Because apparently the people are too stupid to look at the side of the box.

Our government leaders are insane.
