Throw the Bums Out

I'll try not to take this personally Bill:

Progressive Conservative member of the Legislature says he thinks Toronto should become its own province.

Bill Murdoch, member for Bruce-Grey-Owen-Sound, made the radical pitch at a meeting of the Bruce County Federation of Agriculture.

He said rural Ontario is fighting a losing battle against "a Toronto mentality," adding that Toronto decision-makers ignore rural voices.

Mel Lastman, bless his self-promoting soul, suggested this idea back in the 1980s. The idea then was to free Toronto from rule by the "hicks" i.e. the Rest of Ontario. Bill Murdoch, representing the "hicks," wants to free Ontario from rule by Toronto. The problem isn't that the Imperial Capital lords it over the rest of the province, nothing personal we do it over the rest of the country too, it's that the "Toronto mentality" is really a big government mentality. The city's electorate certainly leans to the left politically. A Toronto-less Ontario would lean to the right, certainly to Mr Murdoch's party's advantage. Yet the problem isn't Toronto, it's that so much of life in rural Ontario is run from Toronto. That your bank branch manager reports, ultimately, to some Bay Street ensconced suit is at best an irritant. That your livelihood depends on what some Queen's Park paper-pusher decides is something else entirely. A provincial government that defended property rights, maintained a well run OPP and left the ordinary rural Ontarians to their own devices, would be unlikely to fuel discontent in the heartland. Bill Murdoch is very good at attracting attention, he certainly got the eye of the Speaker during the Fall session, and the idea is of course a stunt. It's not that the idea wouldn't be popular, it's that no one thinks it would actually happen.

Hmmm, does defending property rights include keeping one's hard earned tax dollars out of the clutches of whiny special interests, like rural conservative welfare bums, who want to be left to their own devices as long as big papa government keeps the cheques flowing??

I'm not sure if it would make a good province, but it is perfect for an insane asylum. You people are mad - racially segregated school system in this day and age, banning books, cheering 9/11, calling in the army to deal with a little bit of snow, the overreaction to every white murder but ignoring non-whites, not to mention your pathetic transit system, garbage collection woes. You people deserve to be treated with contempt.

I have a better idea: destroy the entire GTA and resettle the population on to identical sized parcels of land. No more economic distinctions or classes, and no more racial ghettos. Even then you people would screw it all up.

Phil,

I think the special interests problem flows much deeper than just just farmers. I can't think of one industry that isn't on the dole (so to speak).

I think the special interests problem flows much deeper...

Indeed it does, but you gotta start somewhere and where better than kicking free riding rural conservative welfare bums off the gravy train.

Its more likely that the spoiled rotten racist rich people of Toronto drain more money than all the noble farmers put together, several times over. Destroy them all in order to be fair.

This article was posted to give old Zeb a chance to launch his barbs. Right?

Agha,

I wasn't thinking of Zeb at the time. But I should have been...

My own theory Agha is that a Torontonian ran over Zeb's puppy years ago. He's sworn revenge since. Anyone who has actually visited will concede there are issues, but it is not the dark Gotham that Zeb is imagining.

Phil since you haven't answered my question on the other thread I'll ask it again here.

Yes, yes we all know who you don't like, how much you don't like them and why you don't like them, but that's not what I'm asking. I've asked you a number of times now who you do like and you have yet to seriously answer the question. What is your alternative? If you don't believe people should be supporting the CTF then who should they support instead? Who do you support?

These are not difficult questions, if you can't answer them then I think thou dost protest too much.

Toronto might be worth saving IF they actually did one thing worthy of respect. IF anything, the reverse is true: they deserve nothing but contempt for their largess, privilege and hate. They are, in fact, the opposite of Canada, not its example.

When that place is bulldozed into the lake, the region should be renamed "Pikesville" after the great American general from the great state of New Jersey, Zebulon Pike, who died trying to make Toronto a better place in 1813. And yes I mean by burning it to the ground.

And died in the assault...

No General Pike died after the battle, when his troops set the town on fire. One of their buildings happened to be the powder magazine. Debris from the explosion struck him and many of his troops.

I won't reveal what "Zeb" means in Arabic.

Or neurotic urbanites addicted to unionized public services?

How about putting all criminals to death and abolishing work-free welfare? People in the hinterlands mine the minerals, harvest the timber, and grow the food that YOUR heavy industries use to manufacture YOUR house full of stuff. You need them more than they need you. Have you ever even seen a cow? And could you pick up an axe or a shovel without hurting yourself?

Publius, you're gossiping again. If I didn't know better I'd say you were a woman.

Wow Shane. Are you going to challenge me to a duel next?

Posted by: Publius | 2010-03-19 8:59:35 AM

Actually, Zeb, it was the British who fired that ammunition depot, probably to deny it to the enemy. In the midst of negotiations, yet.

I wondered where your screen name came from.

And Agha, "Zebulon" is Hebrew for "exaltation." I don't know what the short form means in Arabic, but I do know that Hebrew and Arabic are both Semitic languages and bear many similarities. So you may as well reveal it.

I prefer the Hebrew meaning for "Zebulon." The Arabic meaning (?) for "Zeb" does not apply to the Zebulon who comments on this blog. I apologize for my rude and unwarranted comment. I admire Zebulon for his excellent and thoughtful ideas, although he occassionaly says some wierd things.
