Godless work: Edmonton atheists to pitch in to clean Alberta highways

In a press release today, the Society of Edmonton Atheists announced its plan to participate in the Government of Alberta's "Caring for Alberta Highways" program.

On Sunday, this merry band of heathens will be cleaning the stretch of Highway 2 North near the city’s international airport. The godless work will begin in the morning and last until the organization's 3.2 kilometre stretch of adopted road is free from litter.

The organization’s president, Paul Welke, says his group is simply trying to make the city a better place to live: “We thought that creating a secular social group in Edmonton was one way to make this city more attractive, but we felt that we could do more."

Their religious beliefs or lack of religious beliefs make no difference. They deserve kudos for not just being civic minded but doing something about it. So this has nothing to do with religion or atheism in my view.

I think he was trying to point out that not just religious groups do these types of activities. A lot of church groups do these types of actions for the benefit of fellow citizens, which of course is highly commendable. Atheists are often thought of as selfish for some reason, so its nice to see a group of them stand up and say, I don't believe in god, but I do believe in helping us all in some way, even if its just picking up litter. Good job guys!

Paul is a buddy. I'm just giving him a plug.

And Alain is right; they're being civic-minded.

Steve,
That's exactly the point that we're trying to make. Also, we like the idea of having a nice clean road to drive up as people come into the city from YEG.

Matthew,
Many thanks for the plug!
