Maxime Bernier on the flat tax

A friend of mine just sent me an e-mail with a link. The link was a paper written by Maxime Bernier in 2003 on the benifits of a flat tax. Mr. Bernier remains my favourite MP from Quebec and my top two favourite MP in parliament (I would find it hard to judge between him and Scott Reid). Sadly my French is not good enough to read anything more complicated than a child's book, but I thought others may be interested.

Pour un taux unique d'imposition

Six years ago? That's ancient history. For example, Stephen Harper wrote the "Alberta Agenda" letter six years before he became PM. So don't get too excited about it this paper. A flat tax is not on the agenda.

A flat tax is a wonderful idea, but this is Quebec. It will never happen.

Mr Bernier still believes what he wrote six years ago. He posted a video on his blog two months ago (in both French and English) where he discussed his arguments in favour of a flat tax. Here's the English version: http://www.maximebernier.com/en/2009/06/flattax/

The difference between Stephen Harper and Max Bernier is that Max isn't running at breakneck speed away from everything he was saying six years ago. He continues to advocate for the same things, with a one sentence disclaimer that not all things are possible in the current partisan context.

If we want a libertarian candidate for PM a few years down the road Bernier could be our man. He's as unapologetic in his views as Randy Hillier and he comes with a built in base in Quebec, in a leadership race and an election.

We desperately need (at least) one Libertarian majority and we'll never get it with anyone from the West.

Watering every bill down to the point of meaningless is no way for a country to run / prosper, so hopefully Bernier can help make a splash out east.

The google translator on my toolbar cannot translate PDF documents.

I just hope people do not confuse the flat tax with a VAT tax, the latter is an atrocious and noxious idea.

Fortunately the Flat Tax will not happen any time soon: http://mises.org/rothbard/flattax.pdf
