Assembly of First Nations Election Today

Today in Calgary The Assembly of First Nations is holding elections for a new national chief.

The AFN acts as a large lobbying organization that pushes for aboriginal issues with various levels of government.

UPDATE: Shawn Atleo, an Assembly of First Nations Vice-Chief from B.C. is the new AFN National Chief. Nearly 24 hours after the voting began, his opponent conceded when Atleo garnered 58 per cent of the vote on the 8th ballot.

As an Indigenous Haida living off-reserve for most of my life and not being accepted when I went back to assist, I am sick of the 'idiots',kneepads, asskissers and 'around-the -fort-Indian-trash' we elect to send to Ottawa or wherever "the elections" are held. Then our ELECTED chief councillors flying to A cowtown to vote for 'her/his' choice, usually from the East for over 10,000 people in my Nation.
Every 'National Chief' who has been elected has accepted handouts and trinkets to line his own pockets.Fontaine accepts an apology from the redneck Stephen Harper, while my Father was turning over in his resting place remembering the 50,000 volts of electricity to his penis.
Anyone accepting the empty promises and continuing GENOCIDE of our people is a sellout!! Negotiate-my ASS!!!

Vern and Wil- I've seen a tiny bit of the corruption you speak of, and I sympathize. What can I do to help? Let's be realistic, I don't have a real voice in my government, either.

"The AFN acts as a large lobbying organization that pushes for aboriginal issues with various levels of government."

Uh, thanks for explaining to me what I knew ten years before you were born and what is obvious to any sentinent Canadian adult.

Protip: assuming your readership is stupid a form of incivility. I know they portray us adults as dumb on TV - don't believe the hype, we're a lot smarter than you, son.

".Fontaine accepts an apology from the redneck Stephen Harper"

We don't call you redskin, and you're not going to call us rednecks, OK? I'd let it slide if your people weren't such politically correct crybabies, but since you are it's only fair we call you on your un-PC comments.

"Anyone accepting the empty promises and continuing GENOCIDE of our people is a sellout!!"

Indians have the highest birthrate of any ethnic group in Canada and their population is rising rapidly - that's the exact opposite of a genocide.

The Canadian government spends billions on Indians and gives them free university education and quotas in the workplace - no empty promises or genocide there, but rather an unceasing effort to accommodate Indians. Please cease and desist with the false claims of genocide.
