Searching for Harper

Interesting article from Canadian Business magazine on "Harpernomics".

And yes, it quotes me.

I much doubt this is the Harper we'd be seeing if only some eastern Canadians had got past their pettiness and given the man a reasonable mandate. If you deliberately hamstring your government, don't be surprised if its policies are less than robust. Harper can only do what the political realities allow him to. Martin, admittedly a less-than-stellar PM, operated under the same handicap.

Harper, unable to get a majority being who he is/was will now act according to what he believes the majority want him to be (power over principle). He also believes that it is important to suck up to Obama, so pretending to be a democrat-lite helps.

In a (left) liberal world, conservatives can only beg for permission to periodically act as liberal governments. Harper, like Bush, will do so slightly slower and with less gusto than true left-libs like Obama.

"And a better option would be ...?" Our better option would be not forcefully taking our money, and paying a bunch of bureaucrats to redistribute less of it to their pet projects. How about this? Our government should let us spend and invest our money as we see fit.
