Satire, served union-style

The B.C. Teachers' Federation has launched a special task force to implement a priority plan to send an emergency assistance team to California to aid the union's southerly brethern in rooting out moderates and conservatives within the state's teaching ranks.

The BCTF, which, along with Ontario's CUPE, is one of Canada's most "progressive unions," launched its unprecedented "rescue" plan after learning that California's teachers had voted 2-to-1 in favour of the traditional definition of marriage in the state's much publicized referendum last fall--this, even though the teachers' union itself had contributed heavily to the counter-campaign in favour of gay marriage.

BCTF president Irene Lanzinger commented: "The California union's membership is obviously out of step with its more enlightened leadership. We've seen this sort of thing throughout history before. We obviously need to strengthen top-down powers and limit executive accountability."

Unless Lanzinger has gone completely insane (which I'm prepared to believe, given her long history of radical and provocative behaviour), this doesn't sound quite right. Any union head who starts belittling the rank and file this way won't remain a union head for long.

Shane: see the word "satire" in the headline.

There are many reasons to abolish (or offer sufficient competition to completely reform) public education and the BCTF is just an obvious one.

Yes, I saw it, but I wasn't sure whether it meant a satire penned by the author, or a real-life event so laughable as to amount to satire.

Regarding the BCTF, they are running ads constantly on TV about Schools closing in BC. These ads must surely be costing big money? TV ads are not cheap. Does the recession not affect compulsory union dues? And are BCTF members happy about there union dues being used in this way?

In Canadian education, you must be pro-gay marriage and pro-homosexual agenda. Let's remember Canada is christian bad but gay good! Sorry, Americans are just a lot more socially conservative so deal with it!

I completely agree with her, if the rank and file are insubordinate we should have them executed or at the very least tortured/coerced/shaved and made to run naked through the streets/publicly mocked for standing up for their beliefs despite what their "superiors" say they should believe. Congrats California teachers. Why the hell Canada never got this vote, I'll never know. wait, i do know, its because this country is ass-backwards on liberty.
