Read your Bible, Todd

If Richard Nixon were alive, sheepishly sinful Canadian faith-healing evangelist Todd Bentley could perhaps have already heeded any advice that the former President had to give. Mr. Bentley, according to a story in the latest print edition of the charismatic magazine Charisma is managing to "stonewall" quite nicely. He remains in a relationship that he has with a former staffer while still being married to his wife. Also he has been about to enter a "recovery" program--for about six months now--under the direct supervision of noted U.S. charismatic evangelist Rick Joyner.

Alas for Mr. Bentley, he apparently has his own "Deep Throat". The text of seemingly confidential letters to Rick Joyner--which are alleged to be from Todd's father, Dave Bentley and from the evangelist himself-- have been leaked to the Internet. If they are accurate, it appears that a nasty public fight is developing between Shonnah Bentley's family and Todd Bentley and his allies. The gloves have been dropped and the benches are clearing. Game misconducts all around.

These letters can be easily found. What cannot be easily found is a book I have that shows an interesting perspective on Mr. Bentley's woes. If I were to say to Mr. Bentley, "Read your Bible..." I would not be talking about the Bible that most people have in their house. I mean his Bible. The Open Heavens Bible that was published by his ministry, with study notes by Mr. Bentley. Specifically, his teachings on "lust" and "sexual sin".

What has bothered me about the Internet discussions of Mr. Bentley and his affair with his intern is that people seem to be confusing the cause and the effect. As I have mentioned, I first learned that the evangelist was not all that he seemed to be over seven years ago. My editors at The Report magazine allowed me to catch the evangelist in a grave lie, which he then repeated the following year. The sequence was clear. A character failing on Mr. Bentley's part led to lying. So, I was dismayed, but not surprised, to see Mr. Bentley lie and lie again. (Several of my posts here go into his most recent fibs.) What I hope that Mr. Joyner sees is that there is a basic issue of character that needs to be fixed when he counsels Mr. Bentley, lest a lack of honour or integrity threatens what he does in the future. You don't want to just fix the "affair" and then have the evangelist do other woeful public sins or expound faulty theology or use the wrong methods in his evangelism. You want a change of heart and mind, so that these things don't happen again.

You may recall that I noted that Todd Bentley claims in his autobiography that he received a special message from the Lord that he was to marry Shonnah Andres...which he did. He wrote:

“…the Lord had actually shown me an open vision of Shonnah. It was my first open-eyed vision. I was in my living room and my fireplace opened up, kind of like a TV screen, and I saw us embracing in a wheat field that was ready for harvest. We were both weeping and I was wearing a tux and she was wearing a wedding dress. As the vision unfolded, her friend Roswetta (who was now my friend) was talking with me in the living room about Shonnah. I described the open vision to her as it happened. The presence of the Lord fell and we both wept. Roswetta said, ‘I can’t see it but I can feel goose bumps.’ During this vision, I also received an anointing of creativity, poetry and writing. In fact, I even received a three-page prophetic poem that I read at our wedding. I still write prophetic poems for my wife to this day.”

If I had received such a direction from the Lord, I would be very apprehensive about going against His will. But if you listen to Mr. Bentley now, he will tell you that his marriage has been troubled for many years and that his wife Shonnah Bentley is a shrew. Shonnah, in particular in her remarks at Ignited Church last spring, has often said that she felt most comfortable being a stay-at-home mom with a husband and family. Perhaps, if this was a valid vision, what God intended was that Todd Bentley hold back somewhat on his desire to be another Billy Graham who also happened to knee cancer victims in the stomach and boot old ladies in the head. Rather, instead he would be well grounded emotionally and have a travelling ministry closer to home, good friends that he could depend on to give him good counsel and a home church. With this sort of partnership, Mr. Bentley could have avoided his well publicized burnout of a few years ago, and lapsing into excessive drinking and an extra-marital affair. Two halves of a team.

Then again, he could have made the vision up to fool Shonnah Bentley into marrying him. He's acting like he never saw anything, at any rate.

Which brings me to the Open Heavens Bible. It's not unusual for evangelists to commission a special edition of the Bible. In 2006, that's what Todd Bentley's ministry did, working with Thomas Nelson to bring out a very limited special edition of the New King James Version, with special study notes by Todd Bentley based on his very charismatic theology. It never made the bookstores and I would be very surprised if more than two or three thousand copies were printed. It is now out of print.

It is Todd Bentley's Bible, in a very personal sense.

Mr. Bentley in his Bible, is eager that his readers avoid spiritual pitfalls, such as the 'Curses" that believers can bring on themselves. "Often when I speak of curses, people become afraid that they're going to get one or that they already have one. You can't pick up a curse at the supermarket or Wal-Mart," Mr. Bentley writes. "Curses don't have an effect without a cause (Prov. 26: 2)....The widest open door for curses in our life is disobedience."

The evangelist has a full page (page 778) on curses due to sexual sins. I quote it in full:

Curses: Open Doors of Lust and Adultery

Different kinds of sickness are sometimes rooted in lust. "But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart." (Matt 5:28). Looking at a woman's beauty isn't necessarily lust; lust is more than an appreciative glance--it is accompanied with the thought: I want her, or involves fantasy. Soon lust takes root and we become bound by it.

While men struggle most with lust of the eyes, women struggle more with the emotional aspects of lust. Romance novels or soap operas captuire the imagination and create unrealistic expectations. Some woman long for romance and satisfy their emotional need for it by feeding on the fairy-tale love lives of others.

In such instances, the doors of resentment, bitterness, and disappinment with her own life and partner grows. She begins to vet what she doesn't have. Single women also develop unrealistic expectatiosn for their "Prince Charming". Every fairy-tale idea about love, marriage, life and relationships that's allowed to settle in the mind--Hollywood glamour, movies, romance, sex and beauty--takes root in the imagination and becomes a form of lust.

Proverbs 2: 16-19 describes the dire consequences of falling into lust. It says that those who are ensnared by lust do not regain the paths of life.

The spirit of lust and adultery saps strength and life. It pulls its victims down paths that lead to the place of death. "Remove your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house, lest you give your honor to others, and your years to the cruel one" (Prov. 5:8,9). Our honour is our strength and vigor, but when we fall into lust and adultery, we give our years to the cruel one.

Lust can actually cut life short, or cause sickness. 'Now therefore lisetn to me, my children; pay attention to the words of my mouth: Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways, do not stray into her paths; for she has cast down many wounded, and all who were slain by her were strong men. Her house is the way to hell, descending to the chambers of death." (Prov 7:24-27)

The Proverbs writer continued to warn his reader abut the dangers of lust: "But he does not know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of hell." (Prov. 9:18). It's amazing what kind of demonic powers and demonic spirits work with the spirit of lust--adultery, sexual sin, perversion, and pornography. Don't give your strength, your years, and your vigour over to the crual one or to the spirits of death that are released in the midst of sexual sin. Flee from lust and the curse of sexual sin--choose to live a life of purity, as a vessel of honor, fully consecrated to God.

Can you imagine what Todd Bentley, the author of these words, would have to say to the Todd Bentley, who fell into an affair with a younger woman--an employee--because he didn't fell like being married to his wife any longer?

Readers who appreciate irony would also note that the first two full verses on the facing page to the above note are Matthew 6, verses 31 and 32. The headline given these verses: "Marriage Is Sacred and Binding".

What is sad about all this is that there are some useful insights in these notes, but will anyone pay attention to them now if Mr. Bentley doesn't apply them to his own life? "Do as I wrote, not as I did," is hardly the advice that any religious leader should be offering.

This is why Mr. Bentley must be forced to have a change in his character before resuming any public ministry. "Preach the gospel always; if necessary use words", Francis of Assisi once said. Without a life to back up what he writes in his Bible, or speaks from the pulpit, Mr. Bentley risks letting his words fall to the ground, empty of purpose and devoid of any real value to anyone.

Todd needs more than reading his bible. He needs to repent and then get out of the ministry for being a thief, liar, deceiver, scoundrel, sorcerer and an adulterer to say the least. He should go and get a decent job and support his three kids for the bible says:

EPH 4:28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.

It seems in reality that at least 70 percent of pastors, inluding evengelicals ones, even in Alberta too, in North America commit adultery and/or counsel divorce, cause sadly they are clearly too often still sex maniacs

In the letter written to the partners, I was confused with the language used that seemed to suggest they were advancing the ministry without me as Fresh Fire. They insinuated they were re-building the infrastructure of Fresh Fire and indicated I resigned as Senior Leader with a signed letter due to immoral failure. Fresh Fire communicated, to me, that in signing the legal documents presented at the Board meeting on Monday, Fresh Fire Canada would dissolve while transitioning the Uganda Jesus Village and remaining staff members under the name Global Harvest Ministry, and I would continue as President of Fresh Fire USA and Europe. I left with the impression that I had willfully resigned from Fresh Fire Canada in exchange for a brand new USA and current Europe ministry. After reading the letter, I realized that it was never made clear that Fresh Fire would continue as Todd Bentley with Rick Joyner involved. – Todd Bentley

The lying thieving adulterous scoundrel Todd Bentley is not stupid! He knows that the money is in United States and was willing to give up Fresh Fire Canada but remain president of Fresh Fire USA. He was hoping and planning for the best of marrying his mistress Jessa, who is an American, living in California, and tapping into the huge amount of money from the many dumb sheep like Benny Hinn his mentor was doing.

And Benny Hinn is not stupid, he didn’t want competition from Todd so in November he attacked and exposed Todd Bentley for doing what Benny Hinn has been doing all along including saying that God would give 1,000 fold return for those who gave $ 1,000 offering. Thanks for these extracts from Todd's Bible.

Your information from Charisma magazine is probably three months out of date. The first paragraph makes it clear that this article was written before late October. Very likely Todd entered the recovery programme months ago. We are of course waiting to see the results.

Dear Peter are you the one who says not to gossip or to lie? Well the words "very likely" is meaningless as you have no proof that such thing as even happened? So you are guilty of what you have been accusing others making up stores about Todd!

It’s becoming very plain to everyone that Todd Bentley, Dave Bentley, Rickie Joyner, c. peter Wagner, Fresh fire ministries, morningstar ministries, Chuck Pierce, Bill Johnson, Jessica are all lying! Even Shonnah has not been totally honest in this sick mess.

Does anyone even remember the truth anymore? Does anyone even know the real truth? They have lied so much I bet they don’t know the truth themselves anymore.

One says he had a inappropriate relationship with a staffer, one said he did not.

One says this is not the first inappropriate relationship Todd has had since becoming a minister. One says he has never had such a affair.

One says he is in contact with Todd daily. Another says they haven’t heard from anyone in 4 months.

One says Todd resigned from fresh fire with the understanding he would head up other parts of (pretty much the same group) just a different part. Another says he resigned/stepped-down voluntary from “the ministry” to submit themselves to a restoration.

YEAH I also do KNOW OF OTHERS WHO TRIED TO FOLLOW BENNY AND some of the others for the money, fame, prestige and FAILED..

When I decided to become a pastor, I was shocked to encounter many many evangelical pastors in Canada who were liars, adulterers, thieves, pornographers, gossipers and abusers of others too. As I had next often witnessed myself.

You have to be called directly, personally by God to be a pastor,. and God will next give you the love for the job, the people, he will God equip you for all of the tasks.. still sadly many Pastors still are not God called, but self chosen..

A pastor’s commitment next to his people includes first keeping his commitment to serve God firstly, not man or self.. A pastor admitted to me he did not have a full commitment to God.. I was shocked at his still corruption

It was a great shock to me when I had switched over to the Pentecostal faith from the Brethren, Baptist faith to see just as many bad and, crooked pastors there now too..

Pastors too, no matter to what or to whom you attribute the sin in your life, you are still a sinner that is going to hell unless you overcome that sin by Jesus Christ

The BASIC issue about too many bad pastors even these days now is not just about the Pentecostal PASTORS but the subject OF TOO MANY bad pastors we seem to have in most denominations still too and STILL why?

Even because many of these BAD people, bad pastors EVEN THE too often false critics are mostly still serving self, doing their own thing, looking up to mere man and not God.. and man’s help is useless for the most part in understanding spiritual things still too. They need to grow up spiritually as well. Are any of you, Pastors, elders, now claiming to be a better teacher, guide than the Holy Spirit himself? so where is your evidence of being spirit filled, evidence of real love too?

Where is the power of God that we see in the Prophets, in Christ and in the Apostles? And what are we doing that is now different in the Church from that I read of in the book of Acts in the Bible?

Follow the Anointing Luke 4:14 “And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.” Over the years many have questioned the lack of power in their Baptism of the Holy Spirit as opposed to what they read in Scripture and the New Testament and here we have the answer that has been in plain sight for all to see all along and in quite concrete terms –

Revelation 3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.

Sadly too often the pastors tend to be legalists sadly.. control freaks, abusive persons due to a false pride, and their religion rather too often a mere cultural movement, it seems..

I had to call the police against a crooked AOG pastor who was abusing me, stealing money, stealing from his flock in my witness too. I am known for and I like to deal with the whole truth too..

Pastors too often still do falsely think they are above the law and yet many of them have, do threaten to sue you when you get too close and personal about them. They want it both ways, they cannot though. They the evangelical pastors firstly do need to get real, to act like real Christians firstly now and work for God rather then self. The bad pastors are trying to get falsely their rewards on earth it seems and not in heaven.. Do what I say and not what I do is what they also too often do still preach. Pastors have to firstly be a good example of what they preach to others as well..

So the other real question as to whether apostles, prophets, pastor teachers exists today as in the Time of Jesus Christ first needs to be superseded by the question as to whether all true Christians are now also anointed by the Holy Spirit, Anointed, Greek word , Christos meaning one who shows evidence of the holy Spirit.. and the answer is yes… all true Christians are evidentiary now also anointed by the Holy Spirit, and if the other people cannot see this you certainly are not a true Christian.

Todd Bentley is the kind of person who gives the Christian faith a very bad name. I've watched him on TV a few times and he makes me cringe. If I was a non-Christian, he would turn me away from investigating the Christian faith for good. Never mind his sexual shenanigans, his public demeanour and the message of his so-called ministry don't line up with anything remotely orthodox. The Christian church needs a whole lot less showmanship and a lot more humble leaders who work patiently and persistently in their local congregations for the growth of God's people in faith, in love and in hope.

How ironic you condemned now yourself by your own words, the beam in your own eyes, and the false accusations of others thus!

Desperate people try to get personal when they cannot disprove the facts..

God still does not overlook unrepentant sins.. so wake up.. especially the sins involving the abuse of others.

The most crooked pastors I had encountered in Canada were those in Alberta too...

Here also you can start with ex Calgary Christian center, the Calgary First Alliance church, the Calgary Salvation Army.
I remember also hearing about that great Conservative myth on promised full accountability, governmental transparency, a better form of governing, and the Harper- Conservative government lies go on and on, fooling only the Conservatives as to who they really are still, liars..

while their own actions show the reality they still really have not really repented now personaly..

Anyone saw the proof that even Todd had repented?

The topic was, is crooked pastors... a too common undeniable reality theses days in Canada too

Still all Pastors need to take the beam out of their own eyes before preaching to others stil too.. I rightfully would rather see a sermon personally practised over one merely falsely preached to others.

Dear thenonconformer you are the one who is the accuser of the brethren, not me? So take the beam out of your own eye and start telling us of all the miracles that God did because of your prayers? Tell us as a pastor how many people you saw healed, baptized, and delivered in your church instead of putting other people down? Tell us how God according to His word blessed your wife and family and neighbors? Tell us of all the good things that they LORD has done for you so that we can rejoice and say as Apostle Paul did, ROM 1:8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. who cares about todd bentley or his stupid, ovine followers? any thinking person could see bentley was a fake from the onset. and if you could not see this, you probably deserved to be fleeced.

bottom line...be responsible for yourself. dont depend on god providing for you. dont rely on receiving back multifold all monies given to charlatan preachers. live a good life and abide by the rules of society. if there is a heaven, you will get there as long as you dont scam or murder you fellowman. this is NOT rocket science, people.

In my church, there's a script above the entry door:

“This is the house of prayer for all nations."

That's all.

If anybody is struggling trying to find a solution, come in and pray and eventually the solution will be clear.

My church does not control, it teaches self-control.

It teaches personal responsibility.

Of the 10 Commandments, five are about man's relationship with God and five are about man's relationship with other men.

It's tragic there are so many cult leaders who wrap themselves up in religious legitimacy and pretend to know all the answers. It's doubly tragic that ordinary people give up the right to make their own decisions to these cult leaders, who are only too willing to take the control they are willingly given.

Anybody who comes to my church does not have the answers handed to them ... once they face up to themselves and admit how they created their own unhappiness, they will find the answer.

Sadly I have been in a "House of prayer" church where the Pastor was next fired for stealing money.

In fact I have personally witnessed 4 separate pastors in one city in 4 different churches stealing the money donated by others for the Church for themselves..

and in one of those Christian evangelical churches there were 28 family members, related relatives on the Church payroll.. before it was closed

so it is not just the cult leaders who are all the bad guys..

In fact a lot of Pastors I know who had been fired from their churches were fundamental evangelicals, Baptists even, not just Pentecostals too

by their fruits you still can tell who they are and not their mere words, or denominations, for a person is known by what they do and not what they say or what Church they go to..

Not everyone who says Lord, Lord shall next still enter in the kingdom of Heaven

by the way Most of the Pentecostals are not a cult, they are a genuine Christian assembly too.

Non-conformer: You are a cynic. I don't what experiences have formed and shaped you but you are judging the church by its worst representatives. Reality is that most pastors are well-trained, husbands of one wife, loving individuals who work absurd hours,available for God's people morning, noon and night and do it all without complaining and get paid very little in comparison to others with similar educational background and responsibility. So, yes, Todd Bentley is a fool as are a whole motley host of television religionists but there is, after all, a bigger picture.

Hey you self righteous supposedly Christian guys and gals just look at yourself. your lack of love towards others, even your supposed enemies is more reflective of who you still are. Get a real life in Jesus. the Evangelical Christian ostriches who deny their sins are still going to Hell and they like to bash others but cannot face or see the truth about themselves. The vipers like you, the Pharisees condemned Jesus also for telling the truth about them too and so do you still even here. When you condemn the others you visibly even condemn yourself as well here.

Personal attacks made falsely next when you cannot deny the facts, the negative truths. So what else is new the Ostriches here too they cannot take the huge beam out of their own eyes, they are a poor example of Christianity, do not practice what they preach to others, they still do what they condemn in others . No wonder they oppose other persons right of free speech, the truth. Some things never change. The bad guys included. They love the false praise of men of being praised by god too. But all men have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Cursed be he that puts his trust in mere man, mere flesh. It is viable that too much of the supposedly Christian posts here are done in the flesh still and not in the spirit of God. What Happened to their own practice real Christian love, humility, meekness on their parts? Too many preachers, pastors like to preach it to others but do not live it themselves.Repent.

I may need to correct my previous comment. If a November letter from Fresh Fire is accurate on this matter, Todd did not enter this restoration phase in October, and may still not have:

Todd has visited Rick Joyner in Fort Mills, South Carolina, and indicated early on in September that he would be moving there soon to become a part of the community there and to receive counseling from Rick Joyner, Jack Deere, Bill Johnson and others that Rick might feel to bring alongside. Todd is in regular contact with Rick Joyner and has agreed together with Rick that he will move to Fort Mills during the first few months of 2009.

Peter Kirk face the fact that Todd Bentley's is giving the finger to all the leaders of the Revival Alliance and Rick Joyner because he loves his mistress and she is more important to him than all the others or even God's opinion on the matter.

Don't forget Terry MacAlmon who sang often at TACF did the same thing but he unlike Todd had the good sense to resign from the ministry!

Worship leader Terry MacAlmon announced in May that he was stepping down from ministry after having had an extramarital affair. "I don't have a timeline as to if or when I will return to ministry, but I know I cannot go forward with my soul in this condition," MacAlmon wrote in a letter to ministry supporters. His wife, Greta, said she planned to file for legal separation, saying counseling and a restoration process had failed. "At this time Terry has chosen to leave his family, these [counseling] relationships, and the ministry," she said, adding that she believes MacAlmon will one day be restored.

Susan, Todd did resign from the ministry. Here is part of an August 2008 statement from Fresh Fire:

In light of this new information and in consultation with his leaders and advisors, Todd Bentley has agreed to step down from his position on the Board of Directors and to refrain from all public ministry for a season to receive counsel in his personal life.

As shown by the Todd Bentley fiasco anything that the deceivers of the Third Wave are involved with is dangerous fire. It not the fire of the Holy Spirit but the fires of hell. And you will note they don’t really cast out demons out of people but put demons into people even though the bible told us:

Mark 3:14 Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach, 3:15 and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons:

MK 16:17 “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;16:18 “they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

Jesus didn’t say they shall lay hands on the sick and they will die just like Jill Austin died?

But thank God that Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever and is still a Healer, Deliverer, and Baptizer in the Holy Spirit and doesn’t put demons on people unlike Bentley, Goll or Arnott!

THAT does not work well with me ESPECIALLY since 70 percent of evangelical pastors as well are crooks, hirelings, false.. ESPECIALLY THE DISPENSATIONAL AND PENTECOSTAL ONES.. When I decided to become a pastor, I was shocked to encounter many many evangelical pastors in Canada who were liars, adulterers, thieves, pornographers, gossipers and abusers of others too. As I had next often witnessed myself.
