Former veteran New Democrat MP Bill Blaikie wins Manitoba provincial nomination
After almost 30 years as a New Democrat Member of Parliament, Bill Blaikie today won the nomination for the Manitoba provincial constituency of Elmwood, and will run as the NDP candidate in the upcoming by-election.
“I want to congratulate Bill on winning the nomination,” said Manitoba NDP Premier Gary Doer. “After years of travelling back and forth to Ottawa, it is an honour to have someone of Bill’s experience and stature remaining closer to home working at something he loves. I am confident he will represent the people of Elmwood well,” said Doer.
Blaikie served as the federal Member of Parliament for Elmwood-Transcona from 1979 to 2008 and did not seek re-election in the recent federal election.
"I am looking forward to the by-election and to renewing my relationship with the constituents of Elmwood," said Blaikie.
Blaikie is a United Church minister and was co-chair of the parliamentary pro-life caucus before leaving federal politics. He describes himself as being part of the "Christian left."

Bill Blaikie may have had sympathies for the concerns of the Parliamentary Pro-Life Caucus, but to my knowledge was never Co-Chair of the caucus. Maybe he was a past chair of the Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast.

Thank you for correcting me, Tim. I was reading too quickly. It was MP Paul Stecklen who was co-chair of the pro-life caucus, not Blaikie.
