Help the Western Standard put free speech and expression on the national agenda!

Censorship50leaves_3

The Western Standard is celebrating Free Speech & Expression Week on the Shotgun blog. We’ve already published an excerpt from The Tyranny of Nice by Pete Vere and Kathy Shaidle, an excellent column by Pete Vere and a great post by Western Standard blogger Jay Lafayette.

There will be more articles and posts to come defending free speech and expression, but we also need Western Standard readers to take action.

You can help put free speech and expression on the national agenda during the 2008 English-language Leaders’ Debate on Thursday October 2nd. E-mail the moderator of the debate, Steve Paikin, at [email protected] and request that he ask Stephen Harper and the four other major political party leaders the following question:

If elected, will you support an amendment to remove Section 13 from the Canadian Human Rights Act (CHRA)?

This is also a great question to ask all the candidates in your riding before you vote. If you get an answer from a candidate -- good or bad -- share it with us on the Shotgun blog.

Section 13 of the CHRA, as explained at length by Western Standard columnist Ori Rubin here, means that...

the Commission can investigate, and thus the Tribunal can judge, claims of electronic communications "likely to expose a person or persons to contempt or hatred." The key words are "likely" and "expose." The offending expression does not have to result in damage, or even in hate.

This section is used against Canadian online media outlets and bloggers to censor dissenting viewpoints.

I just submitted my question and indicated that the answer to this question is going to be paramount in my decision about whether or not I will vote in this election.

Matthew, is there any way to keep this post at the top of the WS blog, so that it is not missed? Just a suggestion.

Posted by: Alain | 2008-09-24 5:18:59 PM

That's a good suggestion, Alain. We've tried to keep it at the top, but our Typepad software isn't complying with our preferences. So we'll just continue to link to it in our free speech/expression-related posts.

Thanks for submitting the question.
