Elizabeth May addresses Hezbollah controversy

In a statement released minutes ago, Green Party leader Elizabeth May addresses "rumours" that she appeared at a Hezbollah event:

OTTAWA -  Contrary to rumours circulating on the internet, Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada did not appear at a Hezbollah event two years ago.

August 12, 2006, Ms. May did speak at a peace rally in Toronto along with Jewish and Arab Canadians to call for an end to the violence then raging in the Middle East.

In her remarks she strongly condemned Hezbollah for launching rocket attacks in to Israel as well as Israel for the bombing of Lebanon.

The Green Party of Canada supports peaceful resolution acceptable to all parties in the Middle East.

So does this mean that Jaws and the WS will apoligize to May for the headline ealier that read: "Elizabeth May at anti-Israel rally"?

Ha! Never!

Was she or wasn't she there? Where did the picture of her come from. Did someone just take a random photo of her someplace and put it on WS blog?

Someone from WS should explain this. This is very similar to CBC.

She thinks terrorists are cool and Canadians are stupid. Boy, did Dion and his corporate masters buy a lemon!

Hezbollah also wants an end to the violence in the Middle East, a goal it will consider achieved when all Jews are expelled from Israel. Given the behaviour of some Islamic radicals in Canada lately, especially at Concordia University, it would have been rather naive of Elizabeth to assume that Hezbollah supporters would not be there, if not as the organizers of the event. For that matter, those who support Israel's illegal settlements in the West Bank would also be there. What's a protest, after all, without gate-crashers?

I'm prepared to believe that Elizabeth disapproves of Hezbollah's terrorist tactics, but at the same time, like the liberal who seeks to blame society for the mugger who slits the old lady's throat, it is likely she is in sympathy with them. And, of course, we don't know for certain how strongly she disapproves, if at all. Israel-bashing has become a cause célèbre among intellectuals and liberal activists these past few years. Some of Israel's actions do seem crude and brutal to Western eyes, but before condemning them too harshly, consider who and what they're fighting.

The August 12 2006 demo WAS the Hezbollah rally outside the Israeli Consulate. She can call it a peace rally if she wants to, I guess.

I'm happy to provide an update, and to apologize, if I can get an explanation for why it took place outside of the Israeli Consulate.

I think it's negligent on the part of May and others not to know that it would turn into what it turned into.

I would think the same if it was hosted outside of the U.S. embassy...

Oh my god EllyMay you really are in way over your head!!! When Wente, Weston and Duffy all agree on prime time tv that what your really against is any kind of industrial economy you know your done!
There's nothing wrong with many voices being heard in any democracy but poor Ms May is quickly becoming a cartoon character.

"So does this mean that Jaws and the WS will apoligize to May for the headline ealier that read: "Elizabeth May at anti-Israel rally"?

Yeah sure, right after you apologize for May being born with no brain.

Fact Check: "So does this mean that Jaws and the WS will apoligize to May for the headline ealier that read: 'Elizabeth May at anti-Israel rally'"?

This from Five Feet of Fury in answer to Fact Check's question:

http://www.fivefeetoffury.com/

[begin quote]

But the August 12, 2006 rally WAS the Hezbollah event.

I was there. [There's a link to Girl on the Right's blog, because she was at the rally...]

I'm not in the habit of counterdemonstrating at run of the mill peace rallies. This one was presented to me as an anti-Israel rally, that's why I attended and that's what I saw there, including signs equating Jews to Nazis.

PS: there were NOT two different big rallies in Toronto that day, believe me.

Organizers probably called it a "peace rally" -- they call everything they do a "peace rally". But it was in fact an anti-Israel rally, as indicated by the fact that it took place outside the Israeli consulate and was peopled primarily by angry Muslims, who don't usually go to "peace rallies" such as those commemorating Hiroshima, etc.

[end quote]

Ellie May is extremely naive. She's got the spotlight on her and did two years ago, as well. When will she learn that it's not "business as usual"?

Ms. May is a Magical Thinker: If she thinks it or says it, it is. "Agree" becomes DIS-agree, because she says it does. An anti-Israeli demonsration becomes "a peace rally" because that's what she says it is.

Sorry, Kathy. I neglected to read your post before I posted mine.

Accurate info always bears repeating... ;-)

She attends a rally that is showing support for terrorist organizations and she's trying to spin it as a "Peace Rally" sorry May but there were bloggers present and accounted for at that rally. As long as Hamas and Hezbolla are given support in this country by the appeasers and the fruitloops there will never be peace for Israel.

Give her a break. She really said that it was a'religion of peace' rally. No one could hear her say 'the religion of' because she was talking to someone else who has a problem hearing the music of english, and that is because Harper is cutting the funds to artists and the only puppet show will be the one that is Bushies puppet.:)

Surprising who supports Hezzies, a few self important Liberals marched with them, Denis Coderre to name one. Lizzy is a fan of his Greenshiftyness, Kyoto boy Dion, so she's right in with their ideology as well.
Still think she has a secret pact with Dion and the Lieberals to drink the Cool Aid together.

You're right there, BillJ; about the most intensive economic activity that would be permitted under Elizabeth May would be light, homespun affairs. Hemp sack weaving comes to mind (on manual looms, mind you). You can forget about any kind of industry that requires heavy equipment or, God forbid, a chimney.

Sorry, Bill *G*.

I think Elizabeth May should have smoked pot.

That anti-Israel rally was a cross country event. Here in Calgary they gathered at our memorial park. Shot some great video of hezzie supporters dancing around the eternal flame wearing hezzie flags...

If Lizzie didn't know what was going on at these events, she's dumber than most people think.

There isn't much evidence of hezbollah support there.

and what flag is this?

It would also be interesting what all those yellow t-shirts have printed on them

Liz May is either lying or stupid

Posted by: Mafwoj | 2008-09-23 9:33:07 PM

Mafwoj: your explicit mention:

"These guys were the only ones I personally saw at the rally wearing T- shirts stating support of Hezbollah."

So it's a resonable guess that those yellow t-shirts say something else.

No apologies are needed from WS - May knew it was a pro-Hezbollah rally.

"If Lizzie didn't know what was going on at these events, she's dumber than most people think."

For any clear thinking person there has never been any doubt.

Why would anyone bother wasting bandwidth on this idiot?

A lot of "End Israeli Apartheid" and we have the "Right of Return" signs there

If it was a peace rally, how many verses of Kumbaya were sung? or "All we are saying is give peace a chance"
