WS Radio: The Political Animals are back in action

Greetings, all:

Political Animals, the Western Standard's flagship radio program, begins at 4 pm, EST. We've got a lot to talk about today:

- Is pornography really speech?

- Is Joe Biden a good match for Obama?

- John McCain's awesome attack ads.

- Why is California forcing doctors to perform controversial medical procedures?

- Venezuela's steady slide into socialist hell.

- More on the post-left and its affinity for Islamofascism.

And, for bonus Canadian content (bear with me, I'm the only Canadian on the show today.)

- Is Stephen Harper going to call an election soon?

And lots, lots more. You can listen live here. And please call in, toll free, at 1-888-7-WBGUFM with questions, comments, and rants.

Best,

Terrence Watson
AKA Doc Watson

Terrence,

"- Is Joe Biden a good match for Obama?"

Yes.

"- John McCain's awesome attack ads."

Attack ads suck. All of them. No matter who they are against.

"- Why is California forcing doctors to perform controversial medical procedures?"

Because they are only "controversial" among bigots. Among non-bigots they are exactly like procedures that these doctors have no objection to doing.

"- Venezuela's steady slide into socialist hell."

Meh. Like it wasn't fucked up before the government started to nationalize everything in sight.

"- More on the post-left and its affinity for Islamofascism."

"Post-left"? Is that a position the Bowling Green basketball team employs in their formation? Go Falcons!

"- Is Stephen Harper going to call an election soon?"

Yes, even though he and Conservatives bitched about Liberal governments calling elections when they felt like it and even though he says he is for fixed election dates.

Does this mean you have successfully finished your degree now? If so, congratulations!

Fact Check,

Heh, last things first.

1. "Doc Watson" was the nickname the other guys picked out for me. I always kind of liked "T-Dawg," but my girlfriend said I'm basically too much of a nerd to call myself that.

2. Stephen Harper: yeah, I agree with your (implied) judgment here.

3. Post-left: That's from the earlier post I did about what some (not me) were calling "the post-left." We never got into that, but we did discuss the role of egalitarian intuitions in both liberal and conservative arguments.

....nerd: that's what I am. :-P

4. Eh, you're right about Venezuela. I just find the process Chavez is engaging in fascinating (and horrifying at the same time.)

5. Well, I agree with you, re: bigots, etc. That doesn't make the procedures uncontroversial. THAT discussion turned into a discussion of anti-discrimination law, which was kind of interesting.

6. Attack ads do suck; but sometimes, suckiness can be a work of art in itself -- like a movie that is so cheesy it somehow becomes interesting to watch.

7. Yes, Biden is probably a good match for Obama.

Jay and I are in this potentially huge disagreement about whether pornography should be protected as speech, or whether it should be protected solely under freedom of contract. I think it is speech, and should be protected as such, and I think Jay disagrees.

We discussed that, too, and the discussion will probably continue next time.

So why the heck did you write your comment in the first place, Fact Check? Just bustin' my chops? They probably need some bustin'. :-)

Best,

Terrence

Terrence,

It seems I forgot to comment on the first item, so let me do that now:

"- Is pornography really speech?"

Of course it is! But the more interesting issue might be non-photographic child pornography. Read this article for more details on why this is controversial: http://writ.news.findlaw.com/hilden/20080818.html

"So why the heck did you write your comment in the first place, Fact Check? Just bustin' my chops?"

Nah. I just figured since I was not going to call in to rant, I might as well do it here. But next time it might just be to bust your chops. I'm fickle that way.
