Fairness anyone?
Anytime the state claims it is enforcing a "fairness doctrine", be rest assured that the doctrine is anything but fair! Given the proclivity of our regulators to jump on the bandwagon anytime a new idea is created south of the border, we need to keep an eye on the status of this odious idea that keep rearing its ugly head every now and then. The Shotgun and the Western Standard would be the first victims of this doctrine were it implemented in Canada.

Correct that "fairness doctrine" is nothing but a tool to shut down those who express opinions opposed to the agenda driven Left. Of course in Canada we have hate laws to do the same. I notice on Ezra Levant's blog that another HR complaint has been launched against him - claiming his blog is hate.

Although I am opposed to state interventions like the fairness doctrine, in Canada it might actually force an alternative mainstream media viewpoint that isn't allowed to exist thanks in part to the CRTC. Notable exceptions are Rex Murphy and a few radio talk show hosts.

Actually John this has been CRTCs usual excuse for refusing various television stations entry into Canada. I recall not too long ago when EWTN (a traditional Catholic television station) was refused year after year since it did not offer alternative views (code name for fairness doctrine) while it saw no problem with Playboy network.
As far as I am concerning the CRTC should be dismantled and the consumers allowed to decide what they want to watch. The same goes for CBC and its French version.

EWTN has had a cable license since 2001. The main complainants against EWTN getting a license were Catholics themselves, many of whom disagreed with what EWTV said. The other issue was that EWTV wanted to be put on the basic cable package which would have meant that every cable subscriber would have had to pay for it. The Playboy Channel is completely different as it is a pay channel.

Really. Please do correct.

The Stig - well I was aware that you did not like Jews and now I see Catholics are included. First of all EWTN offered to provide their network completely free to any Canadian television cable. Secondly the so-called "catholics" who opposed EWTN were people demanding that the Catholic Church ordain female priest, accept abortion and same sex marriage. These groups were formally denounced by the Church as not Catholic. The reason given by the CRTC for denying EWTN entry into Canada was as I already stated.
So even as a Jew I followed the situation with interest and stand by what I first wrote.
