Watch for this sleight-of-hand by American politicians
As it's election time down here, you're going to hear a lot about "ending our dependence on foreign oil." In a lot of cases, this is just protectionism or radical environmentalism in disguise.
How do I know? I can tell from the rantings of the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in my state (Virginia), Mark Warner. Warner is pulling the "foreign oil" nonsense, knowing full well that when Americans think "foreign oil," we think the Saudi royal family.
So I'm going to spend this year (among other things) counting the number of politicians who will actually name our biggest outside oil supplier since 2004 (hint: most of you, dear readers, live there). I doubt I'll need more than one hand.

I'd say you're right about the one hand thing. The fact that most of our oil reserves are owned by American based companies helps smooth over any little differences with us. We aren't likely to nationalize the industry, and the threat of insurrection is very low.
Our citizens actually reap some rewards from the sale of the product, unlike the arab countries. Most of the ranting about US companies comes from somewhere well outside the producing provinces. We had the good sense to follow your lead when it came to Kyoto.
When all's said and done, your politicians have very little cause to name us as a source of foreign oil.

Oh, don't worry about Mark Warner. I hear that there's a very good reason that he didn't run for President.
