RCMP raid targeted alleged Tory campaign spending scheme

Tomorrow’s (Monday's) Globe and Mail is reporting that...

The RCMP raid on Conservative headquarters last week was initiated to obtain information related to an alleged scheme to exceed spending limits during the 2006 federal election, documents released yesterday [Sunday] confirm....

“Funds were transferred into and out of each of the bank accounts of the 67 campaigns identified as having participated in the alleged scheme, entirely under the control of and at the direction of officials of the Conservative Fund Canada and/or Conservative Party of Canada,” CTV reported, quoting Mr. Lamothe's affidavit....

[Ronald Lamothe is the assistant chief investigator of the Office of the Commissioner of Canada Elections.]

Essentially, Mr. Lamothe said, the party was trying to get around the election spending limit of $18,278,278.64 by getting local candidates to pay for national ads – and then asking Elections Canada to reimburse the candidates for those costs.

CTV is also reporting that Conservative Party officials spoke privately Sunday night to a select group of reporters saying “the party did nothing wrong and that they had followed all regulations in election spending” and that “other parties had acted in a similar way during federal elections.”

The only good that can come out of this mess is perhaps a broad realization that campaign finance laws unjustly restrict free political speech and have the real potential to create a whole new class of "paper criminals," to borrow a phrase from Pierre Lemieux.

LOL! Marc, keep on dreaming about getting Les Quebecois/Quebecoises to vote Oui in a referendum! Aint gonna happen! Mulroney brought all the Separatistes to Ottawa. The Separatistes hated Trudeau, Chretien and Dion for standing up to them! Remember, Lucien Bouchard was a cabinet minister in a CONservative Mulroney government in Ottawa! Harper is trying to play the same game! Look at Harper's love affair with Mario Dumont and L'Action Democratique.

Posted by: ROGER | 2008-04-21 2:23:07 PM

Alain, stop defending the defrauding of Canadian taxpayers! CONservatives are trying to get their thieving fingers on taxpayers money by a scheme similar to ENRON creative accounting! These thieves need to be punished with jail time!

Posted by: ROGER | 2008-04-21 2:26:17 PM

Separatists don't like Bouchard. He sold his soul.

L'Action Democratique have wait all these years to be taken seriously and if you do a provincial election tomorow, the ADQ is going back to where it's from: L'École de l'humour.

Our Local Quebec Anglos have never been so in favor of an idependant Québec. At least, they would be pretty inclined to vote PQ in a new election.

Everything I'm expressing right now can be confirmed by your own medias made by and for ROC's Anglos.

It's not about federal PMs' we distrust the most, it's anout our understanding that Canadian federalism plays against us and don't represent us.

Believe me, I'm maybe dreaming but it's a living dream. Victor Lévy-Beaulieu, a National tresor that should be cherish by Canadian institutions and residents, is a new candidate for "Le parti indépendantiste" who's more hardcore than the PQ. How can you explain this new parti and nouveau souffle if I live in a dream.

Keep reading your medias made by and for Anglos.

If Quebec is an unhappy woman, the you are right, you must be allowed to leave. If Quebec is a confused woman who's listening to her troublemaking sister, that's a different story.

How about separate vacations? Maybe a girl's night out? What if I promise to do the dishes twice a week?

Posted by: dp | 2008-04-21 4:39:31 PM

Yes - it must have been those nasty Liberals that forced the CONs to write all of those impliacting email and hid them on CON PCs and it must have been the hand of supervillain Dion that forced Sparrow and Findlay to hold the disasterous spin session that led them to run out the fire escape like guilty little bitches.

What are you CONs - Scientologists?!

Posted by: joe bleau | 2008-04-21 5:49:42 PM

Harper is a cynical opportunist looking out for his own interests, not that of the country.

First deficit in 10 years is what the headlines will be screaming soon across Canada--thanks to Harper and Flaherty's incompetence and political pandering!

The CONservatives stole the last election. That is now clear for all to see. Just like they tried to buy Cadman, so they bought the election! These con artists fraud scammers belong in jail!

Posted by: ROGER | 2008-04-21 5:52:02 PM

JOE BLEAU---PLEASE, I can't take any more laughter at these CON clowns! LOL! They are such sheep!

Posted by: ROGER | 2008-04-21 5:53:49 PM

Harper has his hand in your pocket, his hand in your wallet, Harper has his hand in your pocket, ripping off your money, ripping off your money to pay for his election campaign, hand in your pocket.... LOL! Harper stole the last election.

Who's cooking halibut tonight guys? LOL LOL LOL

Call a fireman. I'm burning up. These little bitches must be punished. Quick, open your back door.

LOL! The regulars here have no respect for their own blog! On the other hand, they are trapped! Harper has been exposed for the scumbag he truly is and they are left high and dry with all the lies. They are scared to say anything substantive because of incriminating themselves! LOL!

First they claimed it was not a raid, but a "visit" by the RCMP. Today, the party line is that it was a "storming of CPC headquarters"! LOL! Visit to storming! LOL! I think it was a raid.

Then it was something that puzzled the CPC--they had no idea why the RCM Police and Elections Canada wanted to raid them. Next they were inviting handpicked news media types to brief them on the propaganda spin to pre-empt the truth that was about to come out. Seems that Harper and the boys tried to stonewall the investigation and withhold documents, just like Conrad Black tried to do! LOL! The RCM Police came and kicked CPC butt and carted off the evidence! About time too!

Sooner or later we are going to see CONservatives in handcuffs paraded in public for their thievery! God, what a bunch of crooks! LOL--Harper actually said they were going to clean up Ottawa! ...clean up in Ottawa.... slight difference in meaning... LOL!!!

Posted by: ROGER | 2008-04-21 6:16:37 PM

Everyone thinks so now! Harper is hiding out in America, hoping it will all blow over by the time he returns! He ought to be arrested at the airport and be taken straight into custody--he can share a cell with Karl Heiz Schreiber who could coach him on how to stonewall! Schreiber is an expert on election finance fraud! That is why the Germans want him!

Just click into:

There's plenty of conspiracy theories on that website and you could even find out that Harper's to blame for Area 51.

Don't even get started on how the Illuminati conspires to keep you oppressed.

Seriously, it would be a fun site for you to exploce.

Report back in, oh, 10 years.

Conspiracy theories? Try believing that the RCMP, Elections Canada, the judiciary and the civil service are all conspiring to get Harper's CONs, along with a media conspiracy!!! LOL! I rest my case!

Posted by: ROGER | 2008-04-21 8:51:26 PM

The details are coming out! Did Schreiber help plan the theft? Was Mulroney part of it? What role did bribes play? Why is Tom Flanagan suddenly silent? Lots of questions for a special prosecutor to investigate. The most serious crime in a democracy is to steal an election--it is a crime against voters, citizens and the state. It is sedition and treason! Why does Harper hate Canada and love America? Harper needs to explain why he did it!

If you believe in law and order and being tough on crime, like I do, then the answer is easy. But if you are soft on crime, then you hee and haw.

Are they selectively blind? Do they only complain of social spending to help poor and struggling people? They seem to have a high tolerance for corporate welfare and rightwing corruption! Caught with their pants down, they have blushed and gone quiet! LOL!!!!! Harper owns them!

"Caught with their pants down, they have blushed and gone quiet! LOL!!!!! "

Oh yes. Passive.

Hear that joe blow? Roger likes them passive. She's a scary butch isn't she. Are you curious?

HARPER INVOLVED IN IN-OUT, IN-OUT SCANDAL!!!! Wait til spouse Listerine finds out!!!! LOL! Harper CONs reduced to the objects of derision and stand up comedy! Harper so much wanted gravitas and statesman standing, is now just a snarling little boy caught with his hands in our wallets! LOL!

" In and out, in and out, in and out, Harper has his hand in and out, in and out,"

Don't fight it. You are who you are. You can never have him.

You can always catch rightwing sheep with titillation! Works everytime! LOL!!! Imagine, Harper being involved in an in-out scandal! And Harper claiming to be such an honest ethical, principled crook and all! What will his preacher say! And wait til Listerine finds out! LOL! No wonder why Harper rather wants to stay in fly ridden New Orleans! LOL!!!

Posted by: ROGER | 2008-04-22 8:43:48 AM

LOL! I can just see Harper getting off the plane in Ottawa wearing a Nixon mask and waving his victory signs with both hands and screaming at the media, "I am not a crook!" LOL!!!

No, not the Conrad Black story! LOL!

Posted by: ROGER | 2008-04-22 8:48:38 AM

Conrad Black owns CB4! His new friends will eat your children roger. Oops. Sorry roger. Didn't mean to be insensitive. I know how hard it is for a butch to adopt.

Almost got stuck three times this morning.

Must be Stephen Harper's fault.

Thugs were jumping on police cars in Montreal last night.

Blame Harper.

ROGER is sane and the rest of the world is nuts.

Harper again.

The Three Amigos are meeting in New Orleans.

It's Harper's fault the levees were not strong enough to hold the waters after Hurricane Katrina.

What`s with these references to ' in and out ' , hands in my pocket , ' caught with my pants down ' and then ' sheep ' Roger. Your choice of metaphor is revealing .
But it`s nice that they let you out for the summer. You`re corny sense of humour is appreciated by all , I`m sure.

When no member of the opposite sex finds you attractive, it leads to sexual frustration of the type ROGER so vividly articulates.

Just take it as a cry for help and laugh along with him.

Posted by: set you free | 2008-04-22 11:21:47 AM

"The Three Amigos are meeting in New Orleans."

I'm sorry Set: No "LOL" possible there.

Not after our Federal head of state goes to meetings to discuss secret issues that will change the face of N.-A. and this, without our consent.

Just another example that our Federal system is a sick traitor that works for the will of foreign interests, banks, companies and Lobbies.

I don't blame Harper here because any Federal gvt would have played this game anyway.

I might just add that it's "pretty funny" to see the man defending the "sovereignty of the Artic" while at the same time, he's conspirating with foreign countries to merge Canada inna big fat fascist land that goes from Fort McMurray to Playa del Carmen.

All this, while you sir are applauding.

Posted by: Marc | 2008-04-22 11:27:12 AM

By fascist, I assume you refer to the fact that governments cannot function without taxation from profitable corporations and their employees.

Would it be better to leave control of our economy in the hands of the chimps who jumped up and down on the police cars in Montreal last night?

I know. We should let the people who run Canada Post help develop the oil sands.

Since you're into conspiracy theories, there's a pretty good website that may meet your needs:

You can read about the Illuminati, Area 51, 9/11 Truthers and all types of fun topics.

Just trying to help. Go, Habs, go.

Posted by: set you free | 2008-04-22 11:35:56 AM

"I assume"
"Just trying to help"

Please stop doing this.
It's clearly not your thing.

Posted by: Marc | 2008-04-22 11:39:53 AM

I think Marc that it`s a fait accompli , that we are heading where the Americans want to take us ; i.e. we`ll take care of you by providing for your defense and keeping your standard of living above that of Bangladesh as long as we can test our armaments in the Arctic and pay you for your gas and oil and let us build our super highway. We`ll even allow you to act out your communist fantasies . I give Harper credit for realizing it and not playing stupid as did Chretien , Martin , etc. The Arctic sovereinty shtick might at least keep the Russians at bay.

Posted by: daveh | 2008-04-22 11:46:14 AM

I have no dispute with you.

Posted by: set you free | 2008-04-22 12:07:18 PM

Why keeping foreign countries at bay when you're not even Maitres chez vous ?

Why electing PMs if they have no powers and do not represent your interests ?

Why dying overseas in the name of "freedom" when democracy is dead in your own home ?

Without defending Chrétien, at least he hold us from entering Iraq.

"keeping your standard of living above that of Bangladesh"

Good one. Like if the US is an exemple for keeping living standards high. By the way: The American people are in the same boat as we are since they have lost control of their own democracy.

I just wish that somewhere in the process, civil wars will happen. I wish to be alive when they will hang high in front of the people the ones Ron Paul is pointing at.

"I have no dispute with you."

You would not be able to afford it anyway, Set.

Posted by: Marc | 2008-04-22 12:12:55 PM

What is your vision for the new sovereignty? Is it sovereignty-association? Is it statehood?

Would you retain the parliamentary system. Would the assembly have some sort of oversight? Maybe a modified monarchy?

May I come visit? My kids haven't seen Quebec City yet.

Posted by: dp | 2008-04-22 12:41:48 PM

What ?
I beleive a social-democratie is the best system on earth as long as it's challenged often to make sure it dosen't return against you or become warmongerers for private interests.

You and your kids will always be welcome in the Country of Québec, dp. We don't wish to invade or hurt or control anyone so we will not have to become "security freaks" like everyone around.

When you're not a bully, foreigners don't wish for your death. If some do for some reasons and pay us a visit, we will receive them a notre façon.

Posted by: Marc | 2008-04-22 12:54:44 PM

What about Labrador?

Will I need a passport?

I'll be happy to visit. Some kids from my school went to Expo 67. I was too young and too poor. One of those events I regret missing. That and a Zeppelin concert. Maybe a Tyson fight.

Hows the winter been in Quebec City? Was the ice festival cancelled because of climate change?

Posted by: dp | 2008-04-22 1:05:10 PM

Bush is a lame duck and Harper is about to discover that he is not above the law! Like Conrad Black, who thought he was above the law and could jerk around with the courts and lawsuits to intimidate everyone, the justice system will be catching up with Harper and his gang! The CONservatives are going down! LOL! You heard it here first!

Marc, Canada could not survive without Quebec and Quebec could not survive without the rest of Canada! As the European Union moves to integration, why would Canadians want to move to separation? All of Canada's best prime ministers have been Quebecois. Imagine what Canada would be like with the idiots from Alberta and the wilds of BC and the hicks from elsewhere, without some balance from La Belle Province? Quebec is too nationalistic--nationalism is never a good thing when it turns chauvinistic. The best thing about Quebec is that it gives Canada a solid statist, social democratic base that the anglo fascists cannot overcome. Canada without Quebec is unthinkable!

Posted by: ROGER | 2008-04-22 1:08:59 PM

"Was the ice festival cancelled because of climate change?"

It would take more than "climate changing" to keeps Québécois from partying and drinking outside in the mid winter. You're adressing someone from where people drink and dance all day at minus 30.

Posted by: Marc | 2008-04-22 1:11:50 PM

America could not defeat a handful of peasants in Iraq who are armed only with home-made weapons and yet there are fools here who believe that America is defending Canada? LOL! Idiots.

Posted by: ROGER | 2008-04-22 1:12:13 PM

Spring time on St Catherine watching the people go by. I remember standing a few feet from the Stanley Cup parade in front of the old Forum and seeing LaFleur, Gainey, Cournoyer, Robinson, Dryden, .... go by in the late 1970s. I remember dancing in the streets on June 24 in Old Montreal, with drinking in the streets and a great carnival atmosphere. I remember seeing steel bands on the waterfront at La Ronde. Je me souviens! Then there are the tightassed anglos in Canada, led by Harper and the clowns! Thank god for Quebec!

Roger wants to keep Quebec so the multicultural disease that is killing Canada will not be repelled by the no nonsense approach of Quebec polititions.

Quebec would prosper outside Canada. It would become the number one tourist destination in North America. Imagine the number of people who would flock to a place with no men wearing diapers on their heads, and no women with feedbags over their faces. A place where a man can say "screw you" to multicultural worms, in such a romantic language.

The truth is, I'd probably want to move there. I could easily become fluent in French in a few months. I'd take my kids to Russ Anber's gym. I'd buy an old Citroen, and wear a beret. Damn. I'm actually excited about it.

Posted by: dp | 2008-04-22 1:23:41 PM

"As the European Union moves to integration, why would Canadians want to move to separation?"

Is this a trick question, Roger ?
Who's in charge of and decide for Germany ? Germany
Who's in charge of and decide for France ?
Who's in charge of and decide for Engand ?
Who's in charge of and decide for Spain ?
Who's in charge of and decide for Portugal ? Portugal

Who's in charge and decide for Québec ?
Who decide for Ottawa ?
The US
Who Decide for the US ?
Foreing interests

I want Québec to decide for Québec - even if everything would not play in our favour.

That's all.
The fact that people cannot understand that or beleive this way of thinking is make against them is not my problem.
Playing the sentimental card wouldnt help anyone.

Posted by: Marc | 2008-04-22 1:30:45 PM

It's : Mon pays ce n'est pas un pays, c'est l'hiver.

Nothing suprising really.

Posted by: Marc | 2008-04-22 1:32:36 PM

Buy a citroen in Quebec??? Wear a beret? DP must be confusing Quebec with Provence! In all the years I lived in Quebec, I don't think I ever saw a citroen on the streets! As for multiculturalism, Mario Dumont and the rednecks are in retreat. One would have to move to hick town Quebec to meet rednecks. Montreal is one of the great cosmopolitain cities of the world! And people dress well and look good, unlike the slobs of Toronto! And Montreal is much cleaner than Toronto, which looks like a slum by comparison with Montreal!

Posted by: ROGER | 2008-04-22 1:34:54 PM

Colis tabanac! Don't you have a sense of humour? LOL!

Who decides for Scotland? Who decides for Wales? The EU is a work in progress. It is a borderless area for nationals. It allows for mobility and freedom of movement. It sets minimum work, labour, employment and social services standards and human rights and privacy legislation. The EU sets standards for everything from tractor seats to electrical standards to vehicle and pollution standards. With time, the Europeans expect to unify their foreign policy, have a European army and comprehensive economic policies. They already have a single currency which many member states have adopted. Under the Erasmus and other education initiatives, EU students have ease of transfer and exchange for university education and credentialing across the EU. Compared to the failure of NAFTA, the EU has much better benefits for citizens and human rights and social services, than N Americans got out of NAFTA! The days of city states are gone. The days of nation states are fast ending--though I agree that the nation state is the bulwark against robber barron capitalism and exploitation--but the EU has created protections in a post-nation state world. Quebecois need to stop being nationalists and think more post-nationally.
