Earth Hour: My Response

Gerry stole a little bit of my thunder with this post but, since the pictures were taken, I'm going with it anyways.

I object to this "Earth Hour" nonsense.  I believe it to be fundamentally wrong-headed to begin with, arising from a belief that humanity and human ingenuity is a cause of problems rather than the solution to them, but I particularly object to the coercive and bullying sort of fashion in which the media has covered this event.  The obvious implication, of course, in all of this is that if you don't fall in - if you don't accept the socialistic view that we ought to reduce our standard of living rather than improving it through technology (though, I should note, I don't expect that any of the rich backers of this sort of stuff will be reducing their own standard of living anytime soon).

Thus, my response to Earth hour is as follows.  When I finish this post, I am going to get into my car and drive first to Bellingham, WA, then to Lynnwood, WA, then possibly to Seattle.  Before I leave, I am going to turn on every single light in my apartment (most of which, by the way) are incandescent 100w bulbs.  I am also going to leave my television on (though with the volume muted, in a concession to my neighbours) and I am going to leave all three of my computers running, specifically encoding video files.

Yeah, it'll cost me a few bucks.  But, frankly, just for the pure joy of going against the grain - and of doing it while it's still legal - I'm going to do it.

Also, while I'm in Washington, I'm going to purchase expensive clothes, doubtlessly produced by Asian child labourers.  Needless to say, I feel good right now.

Pictures after the break.

Paganism, nothing more. And to think these leftie-eggheads actually are being paid through the public purse. Disgusting. Time to light up both my homes......

Most people keep the lights off 6-7 hours each night while they sleep, and a few more when they're at work. What does one extra hour mean? NOTHING!

Unless of course you're one of these people who 1) are up all night doing nothing; and 2) have no jobs to go to during the day.

Well done, eco-losers, you've just been pwned by your own shallowness. Please tell me you didn't see that coming.

I didn't do anything different, other than change my computer's homepage to Yahoo, after I saw Google had a black background on their page today.

This earth hour rates quite high on the bullshit meter.

Rubbish! But then, what should we expect from an uneducated dolt, who thinks there is such a word as "anyways"!

You need some new and up to date lighting fixtures!

So what have you accomplished? Your additional energy usage isn't even a drop in the bucket in comparison with your community's energy usage, so no one other than your cheer squad noticed. On the other hand, you succeeded in costing yourself more money with your activities, making yourself look ridiculous to anyone with an ounce of wit. Bravo.

yeah, very bright... loosing money to make a statement like that is going to make you look reeeeeeal sweet. Maybe you should read into the initiative and how they are trying to speculate cost and action by seeing public reaction and actual wattage count. but nooo, fat americans will always abuse.

As if a commie like you cares how much money a Canadian like me loses.

You only care about having the power to RATION the heat and light I want to freely buy with my money and the fact that you can't RIGHT NOW makes you a bitter little Red/Green blind fear monger.

you watch too many 80's action films... I haven't heard the word commie since ronald reagan.
I could care less what you do with your life.

I'm going to turn on ALL the lights in the house, light all oil burning lamps, and light numerous candles, turn on both Bose radios, and two HDTVs, and maybe turn on the oven to simmer some water for tea when I get back home. Then, I'm going over to a birthday party with some lefty friends of mine and listen to their B.S. for one hour in the dark. I'm just wondering what stupendous sacrifice we'll be called upon to make when some idiot dreams up Earth "minute"?
