Stephane Dion: Ann Coulter of the North?

Did anyone catch this comment by Peter Mackay in Question Period?

Monday, January 28, 2008

Hon. Peter MacKay (Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, CPC):

Mr. Speaker, as the new enhanced agreement as of May 2007 allows for, there is increased monitoring. We do have eyes inside the prison. That allows for the type of discovery of the disclosure that this government proactively made.

I have a question for the member opposite [Stephane Dion]. He seems to have changed his position somewhat and has now focused his concerns greatly on the issue of torture. We know he has said previously, “Sticking too firmly to the rule of law simply allows terrorists too much leeway to exploit our freedoms...To defeat evil we must traffic in evils: indefinite detention of suspects, coercive interrogations, targeted assassinations, even pre-emptive war”—

Where did this Dion quotation come from? What was the context?

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Stephane Dion: Ann Coulter of the North?:

It would appear to be a misquote:

The words appear to be from Michael Igantieff, which makes much more sense. Presumably either they are from, or they are a paraphrase of something that he said in his book "The Lesser Evil."

I'll try and dig up my copy later, to confirm.

Adam is right. It was Igantieff. It might be from a book, or maybe just a NY Times article. You can read an extended quote with commentary here:

A skirt would suit Dion better than Coulter somehow...

I think, if you check QP, Peter was answering a question from Mike Igentief. The Prime Minister answered all of Deyawns ramblings if I remember correctly. Deyawn was all over the mental map. Very UNLIKE Ann C.

The Liberals ARE DIVIDED on the Afghan situation, including the supposed Leader and his second-in-fuzzification, Ignatieff.
Of course we can't forget le petit General, Denis Coderre, expert on military matters and Afghanistan in particular. He learned a lot from his trip to the Tim Horton Tent in Kandahar. Coffee and donuts brings out the facts.

They're rantings about torture of prisoners is nothing to do with concern for human rights and all to do with politics. It's nothing but phony indignation, the Liberals play it so well.
Layton is a side show, shadow boxing his way to obscurity.

It's not realistic to assume the soldiers in the field can watch prisoners, dodge roadside bombs, help rebuild the country, while fighting to rid the place of the Taliban.

They both look like an effeminate male.

This was my mistake. I thought the comment was directed at Dion during QP. Thanks to all the Western Standard citizen reporters who corrected the record and my mistake. It sure didn't sound right.
