Star of "Silent Movie" dies

As  long time admirer of the genius of Marcel Marceau and Mel Brooks this item caught my eye. Marcel Marceau, famous French mime, had the only speaking role in Mel Brooks" celebrated opus "Silent Movie". What did he say? Find out here;  http://www.startribune.com/1526/story/1440651.html

One Frenchie I could respect. He didn't say anything offensive. And he had talent!

And in other news from France:

"A restless Sarkozy vows to lead Europe into a new era"

By Elaine Sciolino and Alison Smale

PARIS: President Nicolas Sarkozy of France strode into the Napoleon III salon of the Élysée Palace and staked his claim to the leadership of Europe.

He took credit for pushing through a revised treaty for the European Union. He declared that France would return to NATO's military command if his conditions are met. He announced that the French Navy would help protect food delivery to Somalia. He assailed his fellow Europeans for having no ideas.

"I can't be criticized for wanting first place for France," Sarkozy said in an interview with The New York Times and the International Herald Tribune, his first with English-language news organizations since becoming president last May. He added, "If France doesn't take the lead, who will?"

This projection of French power is like that of General Charles de Gaulle, and every French leader since. But Sarkozy departs from classic Gaullist doctrine by suggesting that the path to that goal sometimes lies in aligning France — and Europe — alongside Washington rather than as a counterpoint to it.

THERE MIGHT YET be hope for France. Maybe other European leaders might learn from his example.

A great man. Both Jewish and French - should be a real puzzle for you, right...

Sure - just like the French who assisted the Nazis to deport French Jewish "citizens" to Auschwitz.

Sorry, obc, you've fallen for yet another myth. Every Jew in France who was a French citizen, with a literal handful of exceptions who through ill fortune blundered into German hands, got through the war unscathed.

Most research indicates about 10% of the 60,000 or so Jews who were deported to any of the German camps were French citizens. I haven't seen any numbers of the breakdown of native born vs naturalized. You are quite correct that French bureaucracy viewed citizens as French and not as Jews.

Nice try, lotus blossom. There is a case in French courts now trying to get the French railroads to pay indemnity to surviving French Jews and the families of those killed in concentration camps for their willing collusion in deporting the French "citizens".

The Danes protected their Jewish citizens. The rest of Europe could have cared less.

The definition of anti-Semitism in Europe was and is:

A person who hates Jews more than necessary.

And your point is? It is well established that French and other Jews went to a variety of death camps from France.

The Danes protected their Jewish citizens.

I would suggest that it was Sweden that protected almost all Danish Jews.

And how did they get to Sweden? With the help of the Danes! The Nazis occupied Denmark, so they could not remain there. Sweden had an arrangement with the Nazis not be occupied in exchange for their iron ore. Ergo, Danish Jews could escape to Sweden.
