Allen attacks
After being slow off the mark to recognize the importance of the Bruce Allen story, the Vancouver Sun has gone gaga over it today.
Allen is the top-level music manager whose daily on-air editorial is one of the best things aired on radio station CKNW. Earlier this month, one editorial also became one of the most controversial items aired on the station. See my blog from earlier this week.
Here is one of the Sun's front-page stories from today. Here's the other. Here's an inside feature on Allen. And here's the text of Allen's more-recent editorial, in which explains himself but, essentially, does not back down from his primary message: new Canadians should quit griping about Canadian society and try better to fit in.

Jack, I've been visiting Moncton one week ago. Was spreading the Word. Working with French Baptist Church on York St.and High St Baptist Church.

I, for one, fully agree with Allen: When in Rome, do as the Romans do ... fit in, become a productive member of society or get out.

So they are debating his comments why? Because they want to "not fit in" or they feel they should "not contribute"? Well all I have to say if they don't want to be part of a solution, then they are a part of the problem and should be removed...

From the Sun piece .. "Tung Chan, a spokesman for Chinese immigrant services group S.U.C.C.E.S.S., said that though freedom of speech is an important Canadian value, there should be limits."
Should be limits??? tell that to all the so called outraged immigrant who are calling for his death on blog sites!!!!

John ~
You misunderstood. The limits he refers to are not to be applied to everyone - just those he disagrees with. Just as conservative speakers on college campuses are to be heckled, but Iran's President Imanidiot gets to speak his vile thoughts at Columbia in NYC undisturbed.

If common sense still prevailed there would be no questioning of the issue. It is simply beyond me why anyone would want to move to a different country and refuse to adapt. Sorry but if you feel that way then you had best stay home. Case closed.

"More than 25 people spoke at the meeting, which was conducted mostly in Punjabi, although the English word "apology" peppered the comments."
Punjabi is main stream Canadian?
Pas ici!

I've followed thi story pretty closely and I've notice that BY FAR, the majority of people bitching are---ahem---East Indians. In my mind they are just confirming what Allen was talking about.

"Productive members of society" ?
Ha! Go and take a look at our engineering schools, med schools, and law schools - full of immigrants.
Go and take a look at Canada's welfare rolls - you'll find that 'hardcore, true, white' Canadians make up the majority.
To suggest that everyone that comes to this country should 'fit in' goes against true Canadian values of equality, tolerance, justice and freedom. Why don't one of you bigots tell me what you think are Canadian values....
Oh yeah and by the way, if we're basing our current customs on who was here first, obviously we should all conform to Native traditions. Or is that line of reasoning a little to complicated?
Allen's case would be strengthened if his support came from ppl that weren't such intellectual lightweights.

"we should all conform to Native traditions"
The winners do not conform to the losers, despite "political correctness".

Balkar,
Not true.
People of colour outnumber the lighter skinned folks in the social welfare system, and incarceration system, per capita.

Lady,
coming from a foreign land, speaking a different language, having your academic credentials nullified, being exposed to rampant discrimination and bigotry, not to mention an often maligned justice system - I think its understandable why 'some' coloured folks end up within our social welfare/incarceration facilities.
For the huge numbers of 'white' Canadians that claim they have been here for generations - what is their reason for getting on - and staying on - our welfare rolls, apart from utter laziness, lack of drive, and a sense of entitlement?
Really don't mean to burst your bubble, but the future of this country lies with immigrants - ppl who get off their asses and actually work towards a goal - whether it be in the lecture halls of our universities, or on the assembly line of a manufacturing plant.
The sentiments of the Western Standard readers can be summarized simply as "SOUR GRAPES".

Yes, we have some native-born lazybones - no thanks to an educational system run by socialists and parents who want to believe that the schools should raise their kids, but there is no need to import more of the ne'er-do-wells.
Most immigrants want a better life and are willing to work for it, but too many have not been filtered out to see if they are welfare losers.

Balkar I shall assume that you are wanting a serious debate and therefore give you the benefit of doubt. You base your claim that the sentiments of the WS readers can be summarised simply as sour grapes on what. I must assume you base it on this blog, since it is impossible for you to have any idea of what WS readers think. Anyone following this blog would by now realise that other than a very small number of those who comment there is no one knocking people of colour here. It should also be clear that people commenting here object to immigrants (whatever the colour) who come here and demand that their host adapt to them and their ways.
Many of us strongly object to the present immigration policy which has allowed far too many unskilled along with those who have no intention of integrating. Many of these, especially those claiming refugee status become a well documented financial burden on the country. We need better selection and screening tools.
Most, if not all, of us and our families have experienced discrimination and hurt feelings without claiming victimhood. Those who worked hard and sought to assimilate earned the respect of the majority of Canadians.
To expect visitors and guest to adapt to our culture has nothing to do with sour grapes.

"Really don't mean to burst your bubble, but the future of this country lies with immigrants..."
You mean like these immigrants...
"Toronto is rapidly becoming segregated along racial, ethnic, social and economic lines, warns a new study commissioned by the city.[...]
Ethiopians, Ghanaians, Afghans and Somalis are the most severely disadvantaged, with poverty rates ranging from 52.2 to 70 per cent. They are trapped in low-wage jobs, even though most have a high school education.
A second very large group live in ``severe disadvantage,'' with high unemployment, low-skill jobs, low education and high rates of school drop-outs. They include Vietnamese, Iranians, Tamils and Sri Lankans.
A third group suffering ``significant disadvantage,'' with poverty rates around 50 per cent, includes aboriginals, Central Americans, Jamaicans, West Indians and people with multiple South Asian heritage.
More than half the children from four areas of the world live in poverty. That includes 41,560 African, black and Caribbean children; 10,805 Arab and West Asian children; 10,325 Latin American children; and 23,060 South Asian children."
Of course for liberal Jews, like the author Michael Ornstein of York University, it all the white man's fault. Interestingly no Chinese appear on Ornstein's list. Sounds like a job for the Bell Curve. Black mean IQ 80ish, Arabs etc mid 80s, Latin America about the same and the Indian mean is 81.
The Chinese mean 105. Shazzam.
Really don't mean to burst your bubble but the future of this country is continued third world immigrant poverty.
