'shrooming
From pot (see posts below) to 'shrooms. No, not the magic kind. You gotta love this picture of the giant mushroom found in Mexico, a Macrocybe titans. Here is a photo of another one. The headline--"Mega-mushroom a savory stunner in Mexico"--tweaked my curiousity. Savory? According to Mushroomexpert.com "The edibility of Macrocybe titans is not known; I do not recommend experimenting." However, a 2004 Swiss study found that the "tropical giant mushroom Macrocybe titans is edible and can be cultivated." I wonder if the folks at Mushrooms Canada (est. 1955) are paying attention? (btw, they have an interesting FAQ if you are one of those people like me who enjoys different kinds of mushrooms with this steak.) Can we grow those titans here? We'd better look into it lest those Central Americans flood the market with these monster mushrooms. According to this (PDF) Mushroom Council report, "U.S. Fresh Mushroom Consumption" is projected to steadily increase, and if you check the chart "U.S. Fresh Mushroom Imports," you'll see that Canada is their biggest source.

These mushrooms are just left-overs from the 1959 movie Journey to the Center of the Earth.
