We've made the fish gayObviously this explains the prevalence of gay marriage, metrosexuals, and Colin & Justin.
Back in the summer of 2001, a team of Canadian and U.S. researchers spiked a lake in Northwestern Ontario with traces of synthetic estrogen used in human birth control pills. They then repeated the unusual treatment for the next two years and sat back and watched what happened to minnows living in the lake.
The results were nothing short of frightening. Exposing fish to tiny doses of the active ingredient in the pill, amounts little more than a whiff of estrogen, started turning male fish into females. Instead of sperm, they started developing eggs. Instead of looking like males, they became indistinguishable from females. Within a year of exposure, the minnow population began to crash. Within a few years, the fish, which at one time teemed in the lake, had practically vanished.
Ok, but what do these fish have to do with Colin & Justin, you ask? Fair question. It seems that the test samples of estrogen were meant to mimic the type and quantity of estrogen that makes it through waste water purification. Which means I - on the Pill - take a piss. It gets cleansed and purified, and your son drinks it. Next thing you know he's talking about his feelings, writing poetry, and making moon-eyes at the boy next door.
It's not known what effect, if any, human exposure to estrogen in drinking water might have, although Dr. Kidd said it is an area that should be a research priority. Reproductive problems in human males, such as declining sperm counts and testicular cancer, have been rising in recent decades, and the causes are not known.
"When we see these kinds of responses in fish, it raises a red flag for what these compounds are doing to humans," she said.
Dear God, what have we done? We take the Pill to avoid having children, and it emasculates our men to virtually ensure that we'll never have children. Obviously I can't cast the first stone here, but I definitely think it's worth further study.

Soon women will be able to take a pill to stop their monthly cycle, what long term affects will that result in?
Geez, men with boobs, women with no eggs. Nice world, huh?

Hmmm. I wonder if this thread is the right place to state that I have 7 children, my father had 6, his father had 7, his father had 8, and his father had 9. :))
However, any further would take us into the late eighteenth century.

WOW! I'm impressed! If I were near a pub in your town, I'd buy you a beer - or 10! One for every child you will eventually have.

Thanks for the confidence, obc. :) I'll tell my wife we're outsourcing the numeracy of our family planning to a friendly poster on the ShotGun. LOL.

If you stopped "taking the pill" that would have much more effect on "boys" than your taking a piss.
You would find yourself acting in a manner which didn't get you pregnant until you were married to someone you decided was a worthy man.
And a lot of "males" would start acting like and perhaps even becoming "worthy men" in our society.
But gosh, I like Bill Clinton, he was so good on women's issues, like murdering innocent babies, and NO WARS!

Take it easy on the personal attacks, Connie. I've been married for 5 years to a wonderful man. We simply do not feel capable of having children. We're being responsible - or so we thought until this study came out. Pretty scary stuff!

On a more serious note, Wendy, it seems to me that there is something a little, er, fishy with this story. I do not mean that you have reported it incorrectly; I simply mean that the conclusions do not seem right to me at this time.
There are certain known substances such as mercury or hydrogen sulfide that are toxic in even very diluted amounts. However, estrogen and progesterone are not toxic substances; I think most people know these are steroids. I am inclined to think that the amounts used were simply too small to create the effects that this study observed.
I have no original information to support my caution other than if trace amounts of any other substance that had passed through the urine, then diluted in the sewage system, then passed through the sewage treatment system, and then further diluted in the lake had caused these types of effects, I think it would be banned from human ingestion. The only other things that I know of that cause these type of effects on wildlife are inorganic. They are often caused by industrial waste. Other than diseases caused by bacteria in sewage, it simply seems unusual that organic waste is causing this effect.
Further studies may prove me wrong, but until then, I remain somewhat cautios.

Personal attacks? Are you kidding?
But then, as Ben Franklin said: "The sting in a rebuke, is the truth."
My observations-comments are so generalized and focused on the broadest issues fundamental to human society at large, e.g. preventing government from sanctioning murder (i.e. abortion) which certainly must be the FIRST act if there will ever be "limited" government.
On the "personal" side, it seems you've previously passed along a notion of some sort of "Catholic" affiliation. If you actually want to have an enduring loving marriage with that wonderful man, try making the total commitment and concern for each other which a natural family planning lifestyle brings into your home.
What you think of as "Right" is Liberalism with about 2% of the crap knocked off.

Normally I find RG's articles interesting. This one reminds me of the reason why writers are not physicians, biochemists, scientific researchers etc....
Many studies have been done on the effects of estrogen on the HUMAN male population.
A particular study was done already on the effects of estrogen on the HUMAN male population.
Three groups of men were identified, including heterosexual, homosexual and pedophile. Each were given estrogen and blood samples were taken over time. What was found is that heterosexual men had immediate spikes in estrogen that plummeted immediately. Their bodies regected the estrogen. The homosexual men, on the other hand, had the same spikes and yet retained a small amount of estrogen for about an hour, at which time the estrogen plummeted. The pedophiles, on the other hand, retained the estrogen for twenty four hours. And no, estrogen does not turn men into pedophiles. I will explain.
In the fish study, the physical characteristics changed and turned the male fish into female fish. This is because their characteristics are not as morphologically different. (Some animal species can actually change their sex, when there are none of the other sex available. Interesting read if you are into that stuff. But none are mammals).
You can all relax guys. No amount of estrogen will ever turn a HUMAN male into a HUMAN female. Why? Because there is a unique characteristic of male testosterone, that occurs when it crosses the blood-brain barrier. (If you don't know what the blood brain barrier is, you can look it up yourself).
Furthermore, when testosterone crosses the blood-brain barrier in men, it naturally turns into estrogen. The more testosterone a man has, the more estrogen he gets when it crosses the blood brain barrier. What this means is that no amount of estrogen will turn heterosexual man into a homosexual man, EVER! Estrogen simply does not emasculate men.
And further to this, men who have taken artificial testosterone for muscle enhancement have discovered an interesting side effect--and not one that is relished, if you know what I mean. When men take more testosterone or more steroids, than their bodies would normally make, they develop breasts. The testosterone is co verted by the body, into estrogen. That is very correct. Still, their 'members' do not go away--yet the family jewels shrink. It is not the presence of estrogen that shrinks the jewels, but the lack of requirement to produce the testosterone that causes the 'jewels' to go through atrophy. Still neither 'members' nor 'jewels' dissapear. And what is more, uterus does not appear. HUMAN sexual characteristics are not comparable to fish.
The reason why men do not morph into women when they take estrogen has a deeper reason, and that being, DNA. The DNA of humans is far more complex than that of fish.
So, relax guys, sleeping next to your woman probably transfers a little estrogen. And, no guy ever became emasculated by sleeping with a woman. Estrogen is not what determines behaviour, in the same manner as men wearing pink does not mean they are gay.
Personally, I find it endearing when big tough guys wear pink ties....
Back to the fishy question, if a man naturally grew female sexual characteristics, and naturally lost his member (as it shrunk) and his 'jewels' disappeared and became ovaries, would he be a woman?
