UN and Hezbollah

Here's an interesting story about the bizarre interaction between Hezbollah and the UN. And here's a photo that shows how Hezbollah often co-locates with the UN. It's partly because the UN posts often choose the high ground -- perfect for observing, or directing rocket-fire. But it's also to use the UN as human shields.

Canadian troops should be pulled out of all UN operations. The 'peacekeeping' operations are obviously useless and only give the fascists the opportunity to use UN troops as cover and/or hostages. It is not worth the risk to any Canadian because nothing is ever accomplished.

In and of itself, Kofi's extremely out-of-character accusation is a clear indication of his negative beliefs about Israel. The data in this story leads one to consider whether Israel may have been set up.

Ethiopia vs. Eritrea in Somalia
With Ethiopian troops said to be in Somalia to support the government, and Eritrea believed by many to be arming the Islamists, many Somalis are bracing for war.

In Mogadishu, another mysterious plane landed on Friday, fuelling suspicions the Islamists were receiving weapons deliveries. Their militia blocked roads near the airport as unidentified cargo was unloaded.

Residents said several trucks came to collect the delivery from the airport. "The people couldn't enter the airport because security was so tight," resident Hawo Hussein said.

"The Islamists are arming themselves and now we have to wait for fighting," said another resident, Abdullahi Ali.

The Islamists recently reopened the airport. Since then, three planes have landed. The first collected a delegation of Islamists for peace talks in Khartoum.

On Wednesday, a cargo plane delivered goods an Islamist aide said were sewing machines. But the government pointed the finger at Eritrea, which it said was secretly arming the Islamists.

Attempts to oust prime minister
In what government sources say were moves to draw the Islamists into peace talks and avert war, 18 ministers and other top officials quit the interim government on Thursday and lawmakers sought to oust the prime minister.

Regional diplomats and analysts say offering the prime minister's job and some other ministerial posts to the Islamists could be the only way to secure peace.

The Islamists' most powerful leader, hardline cleric Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, has ruled out any meeting unless Ethiopia stops its "invasion" of Somalia.

Ethiopia, which is allied to President Abdullahi Yusuf's government, denies sending troops and has also accused old foe Eritrea of supplying arms to the Islamists.

The United Nations has an arms embargo on Somalia. But it has been ignored for years, and the nation of 10 million people is awash with light and heavy weaponry.

The truth and the facts are going to take some time on this event. Anyone with a brain and a thought process would know Israel would NEVER purposely attack the UN outpost, that is not their way of operating. No one can be trusted on the terrorist Hezbollah side and when Annan made such an outrageous statement, he cannot be trusted either. He should know there is a huge possibility this was set up by the terrorists for maximum impact on world opinion against Israel. The UN has to be cleaned up, it has lost all usefulness and credibility. UN peace-keeping is useless in the tinderboxes of the world, terrorists will not respect any kind of control. It's a mess and sadly we have imported terrorists and supporters to this country, we have no idea what we have in our midst. Question is, how is our government going to deal with it to keep the people safe from these sick excuses for humanity?

Nothing like silly assertions like yours to make your point.

DCM, Israel will crush them. Although previously Israel did not Finnish the job of rooting them out because they were hindered by Muslim propaganda, UN and public opinion; and instead, Israel did a grave mistake of believing Muslims that giving up Gaza and south Lebanon will ensure peace.

This time Israel understands that no Muslim propaganda, UN or public opinion is going to get in their way. They will first crush Hizbullah then move on to Iran.

It would seem that messengerofAllah is a guy called "ryan." Any chance he's trying to flush out some over-the-top responses to his overblown rhetoric? (I have been taken aback by his threats, which are violent and hate-filled.)

Chaim Potok, the writer of The Chosen, Davida's Harp, and My Name is Asher Lev, to name a few of his books, once said about the Jews, "We are either loved too much or hated too much."

In the Judeo-Christian Scriptures, the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Jesus has made it clear that the Jews are the chosen people. Like Jesus, they elicit very strong responses: People either love them or hate them, and though they are a tiny minority of the world's population, they have contributed to the scientific and artistic enlightenment of the world way beyond their numbers--which leads me to sometimes wonder if there isn't an element of envy in the Muslims' hatred of and rage towards the Jews.

I am astonished at the visceral hatred of many towards Israel and cannot understand why so many seem to think that Israel does not have a right to exist. It is one of the only democracies in the ME, something you'd think "the free world" would be interested in encouraging and defending, so it is more than puzzling that so many small "l" liberals don't seem to be very "liberal" at all.

The U.N., which is supposed to be a neutral body, is far from neutral towards Israel; it seems pretty clear from reports coming out of Lebanon, and from the Canadian U.N. soldier who is missing (and presumed dead, I suspect) that the U.N. post was being used as a human shield for Hezbollah. I am not defending Israel's hitting of the U.N. post, but it is quite understandable that the post might have been hit because of its extremely close proximity to a Hezbollah stronghold.

Defending Hezbollah and their terrorist tactics is reprehensible. Kofi Annan's allegation, without knowing all the facts, that Israel deliberately attacked the U.N. post is unconscionable. It would appear that Israel is fighting for its life, a David against a Goliath.

May G*d have mercy on them.

Without a moderator, without someone to lay down ground rules and insist that bloggers adhere to them or be banned, the tone of the discussion (sic) deteriorates to name-calling, mud-slinging, and downright hate-filled vendective.

This thread pretty much proves what happens when no one's in charge. Ezra, Kevin, SOMEONE, please take ownership of these threads, so intelligent debate can continue. As a subscriber to WS, and its sane and in-the-vanguard approach to things, I am expecting nothing less.

I’ll inject some pragmatism into this discussion with an excellent article by Pat Buchanan

Israel's Vietnam Syndrome by Patrick J. Buchanan

Behind the U.S. refusal to support a cease-fire in the Israeli-Hezbollah war lies a stark reality. Israel needs more time to attain its strategic goal: Cleanse Lebanon, south of the Litani, of Hezbollah fighters and Katyusha rockets. A cease-fire in place means Hezbollah wins the war.

Yet, one day after Israel lost nine soldiers and 22 wounded in an ambush outside a town it claimed to have taken, its cabinet appears to have given up on sending in the army. Israel is going to rely on air power and artillery to root out Hezbollah, which means that Israel will fail.

And if the IDF is not going in, the United States should support a cease-fire now. For U.S. interests are at rising risk.

The Shia of south Lebanon, driven out of villages and towns by 30,000 Israeli artillery shells and hundreds of precision-guided bombs, are pouring into south Beirut. These people could take vengeance on Americans for the green light Bush gave Israel on the destruction of their homeland and the deaths visited upon their friends, neighbors and family members.

Given the devastation done by Israel's shock-and-awe campaign, the humanitarian disaster of some 800,000 refugees could produce a political disaster: the collapse of Lebanon into a failed state. The one shining success of Bush's democracy crusade in the Arab world had been Lebanon's Cedar Revolution.

Then there is the danger the Shia of Iraq will, in solidarity with their co-religionists in Lebanon, turn on the Americans for the blank check Bush gave the Israeli Air Force to work its will in Lebanon. Pro-American Arab regimes have all been thrown on the defensive among their people, as Al-Jazeera shows, 24 hours a day, the carnage visited on Lebanon by an Israel that is using U.S. weapons and bombs, not unlike those bunkers-busters we conspicuously turned over to them last week.

Why did Israel launch an air war against Lebanon rather than a ground war to engage and eliminate Hezbollah?

Perhaps because the Israeli chief of staff is an air force man. Perhaps to send a message that this is what happens to Arab nations that trifle with Israel. But certainly to avoid the casualties Israel knows must come from a ground war in Lebanon against a dug-in Hezbollah prepared to fight and die.

The 1982 invasion of Lebanon was Israel's Vietnam. The shelling of Beirut for weeks on end cost her the moral high ground, just as the televised devastation of Lebanon these last two weeks has done. The massacre of men, women and children in the Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra and Chatilla were an Israeli My Lai, with this difference: Approval for these Phalangist atrocities appears to have come from the highest levels of the IDF.

After 18 years of being bled in Lebanon, Israel gave up and went home. The Vietnam syndrome set in.

Still, how can Hezbollah and its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, claim to have won the war, when they have inflicted far less damage and taken many more casualties? Answer: By simply standing at war's end.

The guerrilla wins if he does not lose. There is truth in the cliche. And as of today, Nasrallah has refused to return the two Israeli soldiers Hezbollah captured. Hezbollah has fired 1,500 rockets into Israel, which no Arab army has ever done. It continues to fire 100 a day, after two weeks of massive air and artillery strikes on its positions in south Lebanon. Hezbollah is visibly accomplishing what no Arab nation has ever accomplished. Small wonder its prestige is rocketing in the Arab and Islamic world.
For Israel, the days of hope and glory are history.

In 1967, Israel defeated Egypt, Syria and Jordan in six days and seized huge slices of all three countries. In 1982, the Israelis were at the gates of Beirut within hours. Today, they are reluctant to go 15 miles in, and Olmert is talking of taking a one-mile stretch of Lebanese land and holding it.

Israel is now calling for a robust international force, preferably NATO, to occupy Lebanese territory on her northern border, and, with the Lebanese army, ensure it remains clear of Hezbollah and Katyushas.

But the Lebanese army, itself heavily Shia, contains Hezbollah, and, after Israel bombed and killed a dozen of its men in their barracks, is not going to pull Israel's chestnuts out of the fire. No nation is going to do for Israel what she has failed to do for herself. No international force is going to disarm Hezbollah, unless Hezbollah agrees to be disarmed.

Israel apparently believes it can defeat and disarm Hezbollah with air strikes and artillery, though in 18 years of occupation it failed. It is deceiving itself. Either Israel goes in and roots Hezbollah out at a cost of hundreds of Israeli dead, or it will have to negotiate, as it did with Syria's Assad in 1973 and the PLO's Arafat in 1994. If you will not or cannot defeat your enemy, you eventually must talk to him.

One dead, 4 wounded in Seattle shooting
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
SEATTLE

At least five people were shot, one of them fatally, at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, and one person was arrested, authorities said. A witness told a local newspaper that the man said he was a Muslim who was angry at Israel.

Five or six people were wounded in the incident Friday afternoon, assistant police chief Jim Pugel said.

One person died, fire department spokeswoman Helen Fitzpatrick said.

Amy Wasser-Simpson, vice president for planning and community services at the Jewish Federation told The Seattle Times that a man got through security at the building and told staff members: "I'm Muslim American. I'm angry at Israel," then began shooting.

One wounded woman was shot in the abdomen and another woman was hit in the arm, according to news accounts. Information on the others wounded was not immediately available.

A SWAT team searched the federation building, looking for any other victims, anyone hiding or any other possible shooters, police spokesman Rich Pruitt said.

Pruitt said he had no information on a motive. "Hopefully we can figure that out as this goes on," he said.

Police cordoned off several city blocks to investigate.

Several witnesses said they saw a man walk up and shoot a woman in the leg on a sidewalk near the building.

"We heard this horrible screaming on the floor above us and shots," Patti Simon said in a phone interview, her voice shaking. "We didn't know what was happening."

Simon, who sells advertising for the federation's newspaper, was working on the first floor when she heard screaming, shots and what sounded like furniture crashing on the floor above.

Simon called up to her co-workers on the second floor, but got no answer, so she called the police and fled the building.

Ian,
"Faramir, the eyewitnesses to the account don't believe it could have been an accident.
I'd invite you to go tell the survivors that they are liars."

How is this relevant? The survivors of the Liberty can offer insight in to their view of events that day but in just what way is this proof of an intentional attack?
This sounds just like the Cindy Sheehan/Maureen Dowd view of the victims having absolute moral authority. Well, they don't.

I don't know if Israel did intentionally attack the outpost in Lebenon. I see some reasonable doubt being expressed. No proof. Just doubt. If the missing Canadian showed up and as his wife has done, expresses outrage and claims it was intentional, I'd still have to ask for proof.

Show me command orders, etc. I'll still ask information regarding errors in guidance accuracy, blast radius, and whether Hez"Murderers for"b'Allah were indeed using the outpost as a shield before making my judgement.

"I'm surprised at how many posters take the troll bait. Trolls want attention, badly, so if everyone ignores them it's more than likely they'll trudge off..."

For too many years I have sat by and watched as the narcissistic "we're holier, smarter, and more compassionate than you" LEFT has belittled, berated and bedeviled good people.

Finally, they are being challenged. If enough of us tell them "F U, you are insane and have a peronality disorder" then maybe just maybe we can begin putting some sense back into public policy.

It started with talk radio, spread to a news network and is finally reaching out more broadly with this blog and many others. Keep answering back. Don't worry, they have no real answers except intimidation, lies, and changing the subect on a post by post basis.

Coherence and is their enemy. Silence is their complicit ally.

h20:

"How is this relevant? The survivors of the Liberty can offer insight in to their view of events that day but in just what way is this proof of an intentional attack?"

Did I say it was "proof?" Indeed, I did not. I was responding to Liz, who wrote, ""Anyone with a brain and a thought process would know Israel would NEVER purposely attack the UN outpost, that is not their way of operating."

The link I provided shows that there are some with "a brain" that do believe Israel might have a "way of operating" in this regard.

Faramir then indicates the USS Liberty story is an "ancient lie."

I'm not offering proof of anything. I am however providing evidence that indeed, some with "brains" including US Intelligence officers on board a ship claim that they were strafed with gunfire by Israeli AF jets after their ship was bombed.

Those who wish to believe that it's a lie can do so. Those who wish to consider the evidence of the eyewitness survivors may do so as well.

Posted by: Ian Scott | 2006-07-28 8:21:56 PM

As a follow up, it would seem to me that these folks, who have come out with their own opinion, probably have a brain, and they don't believe it was an accident:

US Secretary of State Dean Rusk
CIA Director Richard Helms
NSA Deputy Director Oliver Kirby
Lyndon Johnson's biographer Robert Dallek
NSA Deputy Director Louis W. Tordella
Captain Richard F. Kiepfer
Captain Ward Boston, JAGC, US Navy
David Walsh, writing in Naval Institute Proceedings

So, I guess those that do decide to consider the evidence themselves might be in pretty good company of some "brainy" people, don't you think?

Posted by: Ian Scott | 2006-07-28 8:27:03 PM

Ian
"Did I say it was "proof?" "

Non sequitur. I did not say you said it was proof.

"I'm not offering proof of anything. I am however providing evidence that indeed, some with "brains" including US Intelligence officers on board a ship claim that they were strafed with gunfire by Israeli AF jets after their ship was bombed."

Again, a non sequitur. Stop gaslighting me. You "invited" him "to go tell the survivors that they are liars."

Again, irrelevant as they have not seen proof of any deliberate order. They are proof ONLY THAT ATTACK TOOK PLACE.

You are appealing to a MORAL AUTHORITY ala moonbat Cindy Sheehan/Maureen Dowd.

And you are still doing it.
