Rick Mercer vs Atomic Betty
Rick Mercer trots out that hackneyed old reason about why we need the CBC:
For Rick Mercer, whose CBC-TV show has been promoted on billboards in recent weeks with the hopeful notation "Coming Soon" -- the dispute illustrated that CBC provides an invaluable service to TV viewers and radio listeners in far-flung regions of the country that don't have access to the same options as urban residents.
Right, with satellites we need the CBC. Sure. And CBC content too, even though creating content, like Mercer's show, has nothing to do with servicing "far-flung" regions.
I think Rick Mercer is afraid of going up against Atomic Betty without tax dollars to prop him up.

Someone (I forget who) recently described Rick Mercer as the Court Jester of the Liberal Party. I think that nails it nicely, and we should refer to Mercer as such. Given his paid shilling for Kyoto, he can hardly argue with the moniker.

Get rid of the CBC? Give your head a shake.
The CBC is our most cherished institution and what defines us as Canadians. Or is that Free Health Care(TM)? I can never remember.

I'm sure that BofM's commitment has nothing whatsoever to do with advance knowledge of any lucrative targetted tax incentives coming down the pipe. Because let me be very, very clear about this: our government doesn't work that way.

The Prime Minister has given Liberal caucus members from this province assurances he is well aware of issues facing Newfoundland and Labrador and will move forward on concerns raised at a meeting in Ottawa this morning. Caucus chair MP Scott Simms says the main issues brought forward included the future of 5 Wing Goose Bay, COSEWIC and the possibility of making cod an endangered species, the shrimp tariff and restoring weather forecasting in Gander. Simms says the prime minister has promised to continue dialogue with caucus on those concerns.>>>

I am not a Newfoundlander, and I am not taken in by the dumb Newfie jokes, so I would say that Newfoundlanders are far too smart to welcome back the "one cheap trick pony" that Rick Mercer has become.
