No Tanned Cleavage Please, We're German

Oh Lord. As if Europeans needed more reasons to be against the EU. As my brother often points out, Canada has some fierce competition in the silly little country/nanny-state arena. From the Telegraph:

Bavarians are hot under the collar over an EU directive that will force their barmaids to cover up, supposedly to protect them from the sun.
Brewery owners, politicians and most of the women themselves have condemned the legislation as absurd, claiming the "tan ban", as it has been nicknamed, will destroy a centuries-old tradition.

As someone who cannot get a tan (the only successful tan I've ever had was one of those carwash ones, where you get naked in a booth and then get sprayed with paint, essentially), I am a huge fan of sunblock, SPF 45 and higher. On my recent trip to Israel I used a 50, and strong-armed others into using it as well. I did that out of concern for them, but, you know, had they said to me, "Rondi, I want a painful, dangerous sunburn, so mind your own business," I would have. Adults -- and yes, this includes adult Germans, adult barmaids, and the overlap of the two -- can make their own decisions about such matters.

Of course, there is rebellion against this directive:

"This is European law-making at its most pedantic," said Munich's mayor, Christian Ude. "A waitress is no longer allowed to wander round a beer garden with a plunging neckline. I would not want to enter a beer garden under these conditions."

In other words, I do not want to enter a beer garden if there isn't at least a chance I can check out some boobies! But hey, whatever his motivations, he's right.

(Thanks to Jeff S for the ti...uh, tip. Oh, and actual Telegraph story has accompanying picture of German chick with enormous bazooms. I could post it here, but this is a family site.)

"Wolfgang Kreissl-Dörfer, a Bavarian MEP. He said: "Sun rays have become more aggressive and there has been a huge increase in the amount of skin cancer.""

Could be Chernobyl, Wolfie! "Aggressive sun rays," what a Maroon.
