The Tommy Gun

There appears to be quite a campaign going on to ensure Tommy Douglas wins the CBC's Greatest Canadain contest to judge by the opening paragraph of this article by Michelle Langlois: Why I didn't vote for Tommy on Rabble [italics mine]:

I didn't vote for anyone at all in the Greatest Canadian contest. Despite the endless e-mail entreaties and the online discussion group exhortations I've been pummelled with for the last six weeks by well-intentioned fellow lefties to vote early and vote often for Tommy Douglas, I didn't vote, not even once. At five votes per week, per telephone number (work and home), plus one vote per week from each of my thirteen (or so) e-mail addresses, I guess that means I wasted 138 votes.

There has been some mention of a Don Cherry campaign on this blog. I've voted, though I must confess, I've never received one email on the subject and there hasn't been much pummelling here that I've seen.

Kevin in fact I just got through emailing Kathy about this subject. In the paper today it said it looks like Pierre Trudeau would win this. Yuk.
Don Cherry is too close to bottom now for a recovery so my suggestion is vote for Terry Fox. Anyone but Trudeau/Douglas.

Tony from the Meatriarchy has been leading the Cherry campaign.

It's safe to say either Commie Douglas or Pierre "We have a great deal to learn from the Soviet Union" Trudeau will take the prize. Giving me just one more reason to try to get hold of that Green Card.

I work near CBC's HQ on Front St., where there are lots of election-style posters on hoardings, poles, etc. exhorting us to vote for the Greatest Canadian, each one featuring one of the nominees. I've seen Trudeau and Douglas posters, but nary a Cherry. Maybe a coincidence, but I wouldn't put it past the CBC to be stacking the deck in its promotions. I'm sure they'd be mortified if Cherry actually won, I'm only unsure of how far they'd go to guarantee it doesn't happen.

The worst possible outcome in my opinion would be a Douglas win. More fodder for the "Canadian identity equals socialized medicine" meme. Trudeau would be a far better choice, though still bad (and it disappointed me to see the often sensible Rex Murphy making the case for him).

Thanks for posting. I haven't been harrassing people lately but I did notice that the left was trying to get Tommy in there.

So lets give it one last try gang!
