Press Review
From today's edition of NORMAN'S SPECTATOR, where the articles are hotlinked.
Many US papers lead with Congress’ failure to agree on intelligence agency reform; the New York Times leads with Iran’s nukes.
The Times’ editorial board looks at Ivory Coast. Maureen Dowd fears concentration of power in Washington. Tom Friedman reports from Iraq.
The Washington Post’s editorial board looks at Darfur. Jim Hoagland is onto the CIA. Michael Kinsley writes about Iraq.
The Los Angeles Times’ editorial board pans Colin Powell’s Iran allegations. Shimon Peres and Saree Makdisi weigh in on opposite sides of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
At home, Paul Martin is away. According to his spinners, he’ll be watching the Grey Cup at our embassy in Santiago; they’ve not been as forthcoming about his plans for Toronto ’s Santa Claus parade.
Yesterday, Mr. Martin met George Bush to “set the table” for the President’s visit to Ottawa, which will include beef though no one can say when we can expect ours.
The Toronto Star editorial board is onto Toronto’s garbage and their so-called football team.
As any thinking Canadian knows, the Argos will lose to the Lions today. Carolyn Parrish and Stephen Harper, on the other hand, are rooting for Toronto. As for the editorialist, he or she can't even get the Lions' name right.
Speaking of Parrish, she's the star of CTV's report from Santiago. The CBC's Eric Sorensen, on the other hand, focuses on the hard news from the Bush/Martin meeting--beef.
Both reports show Martin looking uncomfortable in relaying the President's reaction to his proposed L-20. Bush, who thinks the G-8 is superfluous and normally flees at the earliest opportunity, is probably still trying to figure out why Canada would want to drop down to the world's top 20.
An autographed copy of this book about another prime minister to the first person who e-mails me with an explanation. Hint: It's not, as Martin says, because the leaders would abandon their prepared texts in a larger group.
The Star fronts beef mixed with L-20, the doctors deal that isn’t and progressive Christians. In the Toronto Sun, doctors are told they can stuff it. We’ll see.
Ian Urquhart says the MD’s rejection is a blow to the government. Linda McQuaig says we could have European-quality child care if we paid European taxes.
Lynda Hurst is onto Condi Rice. Olivia Ward serves up Natan Sharansky’s views on Mideast democracy, while Graham Fraser gives us Romeo Dallaire’s on conflict resolution.
Rick Anderson touts his former boss’ views on religion and politics. Richard Gwyn says advocates don’t understand that rural representation will decline if we adopt proportional representatioin; had he read Jeff Simpson’s two columns this week, he’d understand that’s not necessarily so.
In the CanWest corral, the Montréal Gazette fronts the provincial liquor strike and Liberal convention. In Edmonton, we meet Ralph Klein’s dad and the editorial board serves up last-minute thoughts.
The Ottawa Citizen fronts the Grey Cup, Bush/Martin, a delay in the adoption treaty and the dead doctors’ deal.
In the Toronto Sun, Bob MacDonald poops on Paul and boosts Bush, Linda Williamson poops on the pit bull ban. Peter Worthington is onto the Victoria Cross.
Eric Margolis, in a rant against Condi Rice, misspells Zbigniew Brzezinski's family name and gets his surnname wrong. His own insights/qualifications?:
"The most important function of national security adviser -- and I can say this having myself been interviewed at the White House for a position on the National Security Council -- is to co-ordinate all national security policy."
From Ottawa, Doug Fisher remembers Ellen Fairclough and other female Ministers. Greg Weston pans the Official Languages Commissioner.
In Calgary, Ted Byfield says Kinsey duped us about sex. Paul Jackson is onto the Alberta election, as are Neil Waugh and Paul Stanway in Edmonton.

Margolis is spewing his usual anti-American bile again. When will he get the message? No one believes your hard left liberal propaganda. Hack.

Martin probably wants to have G20 meetings because it is becoming more and more obvious that Canada doesn't belong in the G8. Is there by any chance a movement to give Canada the boot?
