Press Review
From today's edition of NORMAN'S SPECTATOR (with articles hotlinked).
US papers lead with new terror warnings in New York and Washington ; notably, the two hometown papers—the Times and the Post--differ on the source of the intelligence. USA Today publishes the first post-Convention poll; though John Kerry made some progress on security issues, overall there’s been no bounce for the Democratic candidate.
At home, most of the country is on holiday this first Monday of August. Most papers front the terror warning along with the church bombings in Baghdad and Mosul ; the rest of the pickings are thin.
The Toronto Star goes with both the US attack warnings and the church bombings, along with a New York Times story we noted yesterday about a Chinese student who committed suicide because he was not able to afford an exam fee. The editorial board warns Ottawa not to short-change Toronto in allocating the gas tax; next thing you know, they’ll be asking the feds to shovel their snow. Gwynne Dyer whitewashes European racism; he should walk around Harlem , and see the difference.
The Globe and Mail serves up a fine piece on Yasser Arafat by Matthew Kalman, who’s in Ramallah. On the comment page, Harper’s publisher John MacArthur fears John Kerry is making a political error in not showing his true colours on Iraq . Lysiane Gagnon says if Canadians don’t like the CRTC’s recent decisions, we should change the law. Jim Stanford is confused. The editorial board backs a Muslim force in Iraq-- which ain’t gonna happen—and an international force in Darfur, which might.
In addition to the church bombings in Iraq , the National Post fronts the severance packages of departing Chrétienites; the paper doesn’t publish today, but its electronic version is free--try it. The editorial board insists our beef is as safe as American cows; they’re concerned about the adequacy of seniors’ driver tests. Speaking as a Victoria driver, Amen.
Behind the pay-per-read firewall, the Ottawa Citizen fronts the same top stories as the Post (the writing is on the firewall at the Calgary Herald, which introduces its electronic edition today). The editorial board says there’s no reason to fear a biometric passport; tongue-in-cheek, it wonders what’s going on at Canada Post.
The Montréal Gazette editorial board is looking forward to Internet phone service; like their counterparts at the Toronto Star, they’re concerned about gas tax money going to Moose Jaw . The Gaz stuffs the severance payments and the bombs in Iraq , instead going with a local fire in the Plateau, Mordecai Richler’s turf.
In the Calgary Sun, Ezra Levant says the Dems were faking it at their Convention, and that voters will choose the real thing, Bush.

Actually I did a wierd thing yesterday. I live in Washington DC. I had the radio on. I was on the phone with somebody. Without thinking, i closed our conversation with: "gotta go... terror alert."
