The news here is that Slate is still around
Howard Kurtz is reporting that both the New York Times and Washington Post, among others, is interested in buying Slate from Microsoft. Now I'm joking about Slate when I say that it is news that it still exists, but other than the Kausfiles, what else is worth reading? Really, what does the money-losing, on-line magazine format bring to either the Times or the Post?

Well, I won't comment on the economics of the situation, but Slate does have some good features: Explainer is always interesting; Hitchens' columns are almost always great (it was in Slate that we got the first (and most devastating) salvo against Fahrenheit 9/11, after all); and I think their political coverage, when they aren't being blindly partisan, is among the best available on the net (their coverage of the Democratic primaries was stellar).

I agree. Writers like Christopher Hitchens, Will Saletan, Anne Applebaum. The books and culture stuff is usually quite interesting. Very nice graphic design. Sure, Slate's politics lean liberal, but it is no Democratic lapdog (as Kerry-tormentor Mickey Kaus shows daily). Salon, on the other hand...

I was always under the impression that Slate was doing better than most online-only publications, finances-wise.
And oh, to elaborate on Mark C., the main purpose of Slate's existence (for me, at least) is so that the big boy of the online news magazine genre isn't Salon... ...*shiver*
