Press Review
From today's edition of Norman's Spectator
It’s Sunday, the day of thick papers in the US and UK , and thin ones at home.
At the Toronto Star, hope--Liberal hopes--never die. The editorial board and Richard Gwyn are bullish about targeting Ralph Klein as a threat to health care. Looks to me like taking on Alberta’s premier, an erstwhile Martin fan, is another opportunity for him to be hoist on his own petard: Have I mentioned that Martin’s private physician runs the private MRI clinic in Montréal that allows people to queue jump, and that the Liberals have not enforced the Canada Health Act in Québec? Alternatively, how about the lengthening waiting lists for the rest of us over the past decade? However, it’s desperation hour: On closer examination--as Robert Benzie and Less Whittington report today--Martin’s record on child porn is also beginning to look spotty, so it’s back to Plan B, or is it Z? Graham Fraser wades in with a fine piece on the looming challenge to national unity; pity that the Parliamentary press gallery did not challenge over the past ten years Jean Chrétien’s sponsorship strategy and claim to have solved the problem. With Ombudsman Michael Getler today examining the Washington Post’s coverage of Iraq—as the New York Times did a few weeks ago—perhaps it’s time for Canadian papers to do some soul-searching too.
Over at the CanWest chain, the Montréal Gazette and Ottawa Citizen front-page Bob Fife’s version of the Conservatives’ Air Canada bombshell, which just might get Quebecers thinking about electing a few Bleu MPs.
The Ottawa Sun also fronts the story, suggesting that it will put the Conservatives in the soup; I suspect their supporters will cheer and many others will see it as common sense—like using the notwithstanding clause to attack kiddie porn.
