Conservatives hardly part of the rich

The Globe and Mail reports today that the Conservatives have raised about $2.7 million: "Most of the over 18,000 separate donations were for less than $1,000 but 59 were for between $5,000 and $9,999.99. Twenty-four donations exceeded $10,000. The average donation was $142.75." This is quite different than how Paul Martin raised his $12 million. I don't have a problem with money in politics. I don't have a problem with someone writing out $10,000 cheques or even $100,000 cheques. But the fundraising thus far illustrates that the Conservative Party is far from the CBC/Toronto Star/Macleans caricature of a party for, by and of the elite. That description best fits the Liberals.

If this is true, then please provide some documentation to support the allegations - or do we have no access to the Liberal fundraising accounts?
