Bait that red!
An interesting story in this morning's National Post, demonstrates that some apprehensions about Soviet meddling in Canadian affairs after the Second World War were justified.
The CanWest News Service story reports on what Carleton history professor Larry Black recently found in Russian archives. Toronto writer Dyson Carter was the head of the Canadian-Soviet Friendship Society, a group ostensibly aimed at encouraging friendship between the peace-loving peoples of (sorry for the lapse)...Canada and the Soviet Union. Over the years, Mr. Carter and his second-in-command Saskatchewan MP Dorise Nielsen maintained that the group was an independent group that just happened to like the U.S.S.R.. However, Professor Black has found lots of documents that prove that the group was steered by Russian intelligence operatives:
...."[Mr. Carter] always disassociated himself from the Communist party," Mr. Black said. "But we found records that showed he was a party member, and his publishings were underwritten by Moscow. There's just page after page of 'Dear Comrade...'"
"I think the party in Moscow realized the Canadian Communist party was a dead end, so they put a lot of energy into this group," Mr. Black says. "In terms of spreading the message, this group carried a lot more weight....."
