The Summer's Best Album? (Reprise)
Glad to see that I even won over our hard-to-please publisher with the new Rancid album. However, I left the story sadly incomplete on my previous post. If you like the new Rancid album, or even if you are a person who maybe prefers a little more twang, sun-drenched ska or dueling acoustic guitars in your punk rock, make sure that you check out the bonus, largely acoustic, tracks that were included with the deluxe version of the Dominoes album.
While the "unplugged" music craze is largely behind us (for which I am often thankful), tracks like the acoustic versions of "East Bay Night", "L.A. River", the Mariachi-sounding version of "Liberty & Freedom", "I Ain't Worried" and "You Want It, You Got It" remind us of its brighter moments and why some bands wisely put down the electrics. The version of "New Orleans" is also fantastic, but I must say that I prefer Lars Frederiksen's vocals on the Dominoes-proper version to Tim Armstrong's on the acoustic version, which is rare for me. I usually prefer Armstrong's "I smoked a carton of Marlboroughs and drank a quart of bourbon for breakfast" vocals to Frederiksen's banshee wail, but not on that track.
Anyway, just another reason why this recording rocks - hard.
