Your awesome Jack Layton image of the day
The Toronto Star's Susan Delacourt explains:
Yes, this is NDP leader Jack Layton (circa 1991 at a Trekkie convention) and we thought we'd throw this picture up in honour of the Star Trek movie opening this week in Ottawa and other major markets.
I asked Olivia Chow about the costume today and she told me that she had one too -- she and Jack had them custom made by a tailor. "Very form fitting," she said. And they even had the special beam-me-up badge affixed to them.
Chow told me that she and Layton are still devoted Trekkies, but they're not going to the movie opening. "Too busy," she said. "We have to work."
This one's jumping, screaming and shouting for a caption competition... so let 'em rip.

He totally needs to wear that uniform to the House of Commons.

If anyone out there is listening, please beam them both up immediately.

,, that is not at " some Star Trek convention " - that photo was snapped in front of Toronto City hall-- Torontophiles recognise the Henry Moore bronze sculpture of the
" Archer" - this shot is looking west right in front of the front doors to city hall..Likely noob councillor Jack was on duty at the time of this photo, serving his 416 Klingon rulers.
Olivia Chow went to school to be an artist- specializing in 3D design and sculpture. Now they are NDP superstars- Someday their faces will be on our postage stamps

I have too many friends who used to attend sci-fi conventions or who are SCA enthusiasts. I don't think any less of people who like this sort of hobby. To a man - all of my friends who do this sort of thing are good people and with out exception they are all very intelligent and creative. All things being equal -- the fact that the Laytons are comfortable enough with themselves to take part in this good clean fun - even if it might tend to make them look silly to the non-mainstream -- commends me to them, rather than acting to cast aspersions on them.
It's harmless fun. Not my cuppa - but it takes all kinds ya know.
PS I think from a purely aesthetic point of view- Jack looks way better in his form fitting star fleet uniform than harper looked when he dressed up in *form fitting* leather vest pretending to be a cowboy.
