U.S. election special: Western Standard contributors tell us who they would vote for if they could

We covered reason magazine's disclosure of who they (and some friends) would vote for, as well as Slate's disclosure, and The American Conservative's non-endorsements. Since it was interesting, we thought we'd do the same thing (with the sole difference being that most of us can't vote in the U.S.).

We asked our contributors, as well as notable Canadian libertarians and conservatives, who they would vote for in the U.S. election if they could cast a ballot.

What follows is the list of Western Standard contributors and who they would vote for. Each is hyper-linked, so you can read their explanation for why they would vote that way. (We're expecting a few more responses, so we'll update this post as answers roll in).

(Legend: * means contributor is American, and can vote. S means Shotgun blogger. E indicates part of editorial team. C indicates columnist or contributor):

(S) Isaac Morehouse*: Bob Barr
(S) Jay Lafayette*: Bob Barr
(S) Gerry Nicholls: Wouldn't vote
(S) Moin Yahya: 1. Ron Paul, 2. Bob Barr
(S) Janet Neilson: Wouldn't vote
(S) Robert Jago: Wouldn't vote
(S) Hugh MacIntyre: Bob Barr
(S) Liam O'Brien: John McCain
(S) Aaron Lee Wudrick: Pleads the fifth
(S) Mike Brock: Barack Obama
(C) Jan Narveson: Bob Barr
(C) Marc Emery: 1. Ron Paul, 2. Bob Barr
(E) Peter Jaworski: Bob Barr
(E) Matthew Johnston: Wouldn't vote/Bob Barr
(E) Kalim Kassam: Wouldn't vote
(E) Terrence Watson: Wouldn't vote

WS Tally:

Bob Barr: 5
Wouldn't vote: 6
John McCain: 1
None of the above: 1
Pleads the fifth: 1
Barack Obama: 1

(UPDATED with Mike Brock's vote for Obama)

Build the Libertarian Party and build it fast. We need a viable alternative that can stand in opposition to the two-headed party that currently rules the United States.

You can add my name to the "wouldn't vote" tally, Peter. Although, if coerced, I would vote for Bob Barr.

Because Ron Paul is out if I Could Vote it would be for Bob Barr.

The winds of change are in the air and the two party system is about to come crashing down. This year will see several new faces in congress of the liberty minded "Ron Paul" variety, 2010 will do even more in this regard. 2012 baring no real direction change for the country with false wars still raging and more unnecessary dead. Americans will be awakened... true patriots of freedom and the constitution will come to power and remove the emerging dictatorial unconstitutional government. Let freedom reign supreme once again! Use Honesty as your sword!

I voted for Bob Barr here in Houston, Texas USA. Precinct 46(Jeff Davis High School). I voted to continue the Ron Paul Revolution of 2008. We must now galvanize and demand that our votes be counted and that any future debates includes all candidates. Obama and McCain both do not deserve to be president of the USA. They should both be ashamed of themselves for having taken party in discrimination of all the other presidential candidates.

"Finally, I would add that voting is not that important to me and I do it faithfully primarily because I find it entertaining. I do not think any great progress in the world will happen at the voting booth, and I don’t think the battle for liberty will be won by a politician. It is the hearts and minds of the people that we must win. The politicians will follow whatever is popular," Isaac Morehouse.

Excellent comment from Western Standard blogger Isaac Morehouse!

"If people want a real alternative, they should vote Libertarian!" Jan Narveson

It never ceases to excite me to read someone of Narveson's status endorse Libertarian candidates and libertarian ideas, even though he’s done so throughout his career.

Terrence Watson on Bob Barr: "At best, just another 'states' rights' libertarian. At worse, a fifth columnist in the libertarian movement."

At worse, a fifth columnist. Yikes. Tough talk.

Robert Jago wrote: "I don't want the Libertarians, because I want America to stay as the world's policeman."

Then you'll no doubt be happy with the outcome of this election and every subsequent election in America until the empire comes to its inevitable and bloody end.
