Terrence Corcoran: Nothing for Tories to cheer about
Terrence Corcoran, editor of the Financial Post section of the National Post, puts things well today. Reflecting on a second Conservative minority government, Corcoran is nonplussed about the prospects for honest-to-goodness conservatives both here in Canada, and south of the border.
Unfortunately, I see no backlash. Instead of fretting about the non-conservative governing records of the Conservatives and Republicans, Canadian and American conservatives have fallen lock-step behind their parties in spite of their interventionist and anti-free market measures.
There was much to hope for during the Republican primaries. Each contender trumpeted their conservative bonafides, and the conservative media--from Hannity to Limbaugh to Fox News and the Washington Times--was busy excoriating John McCain for being too much of a liberal. Sean Hannity, after McCain's victory, was despondent. He assured his listeners he wouldn't sell out, and wouldn't support McCain just because he had an "R" next to his name. McCain would have to prove himself, and actually earn an endorsement.
But instead of earning an endorsement, it was enough that the other guy represented the worstest of all possible outcomes in the history of mankind. And the same is true here--it isn't that Harper's record warrants an endorsement from us small government, pro-individual liberty types, it's that the other guys are, well, really, really bad (they're not the "worstest," since it's hard to imagine Trudeau losing that spot for regular conservatives).
Here's an excerpt from Corcoran's piece:
But what he has won for conservatives, still the core of Harper Tory support across the country, is nothing to cheer about. What they could get, in fact, is little more than a few more years of what Tom Flanagan depressingly called "incremental conservatism." As we have come to learn, in practice incremental conservatism is the kind of conservatism that never arrives.
Each increment forward on a couple of conservative issues-- telecom deregulation, maybe, or military spending, a family tax issue -- has been matched by lurching fallbacks on scores of others. On the environment and consumer regulation, not to mention spending, the Tories have been as prone to heavy government intervention as any non-conservative. But having said all that, it is possible Mr. Harper has an opportunity to distinguish himself.
The United States is on the brink of falling off the conservative ship. The financial market turmoil is now in the hands of the Bush administration, an interventionist regime that continues to unleash the most un-conservative anti-market measures the United States has seen since war time and the Great Depression. The likely victory of Barack Obama and the Democrats in Washington, gaining control of Congress and the presidency, looks destined to produce another period of heavy government involvement in the U. S. economy.

"Nothing for the Conservatives to cheer about". Bullshit. It should read nothing for Terrence Corcoran to cheer about.
There is plenty to cheer about from the Conservative perspective. Mr. Harper first put together a successful Conservative coalition and governed in a Minority through two and a half years.
He has now gotten a larger Minority in spite of all the lies spewed by the Bloc in Quebec, the vitriolic Greedy Gut, Danny Williams commanding his populace to vote ABC, and, the Leftist media across the board.
Harper is in for the long haul and for the betterment of Canada, not the hangers-on and trough slurping Liberals and their buddies. They're gone, get used to it. Finally even the Ontario people are slowly cluing in to exactly what's going on.
Bobby Rae is the new media darling. Is that the best of the crop? We even hear the name McKenna cropping up as their saviour. Bring on whoever, and they better have lot's of staying power because it will take a decade to get their act together. Bankruptcy in all meaning of the word will take a long investment of time.
