Matt Welch: A libertarian critique of John McCain
Matt Welch is the editor of Reason magazine. Reason is, far and away, my favourite magazine of all time. (Somewhere in my basement, there's a stack of Reason magazines from the late 1970s until the 1990s.)
One reason to think so highly of Reason is this: They are only partisan to an ideal, and not to a political party. They don't shy away from covering "fringe" candidates, if they express a "free minds, free markets" attitude--which just happens to be the magazine's slogan. And they don't shy away from bashing big names in the big parties, even if it might mean fewer subscribers.
Here's a good video of Matt Welch making the libertarian case against John McCain back in January:
Here, meanwhile, is Welch's libertarian case for John McCain.
The precis: "...it would be inaccurate at best to claim that a McCain presidency offers zero potential upside for libertarians. After two years of studying the Arizona senator's habits (and coming to mostly critical conclusions), I can identify seven plausible reasons why a limited-government type might consider voting for the guy, even if I for one won't. Each reason, as you'll see, has as least one serious caveat."
UPDATE: Matt Welch took notice, and called the WS "terrific." (Well, thank you, sir). If you'd like to hear me, Terrence Watson, and Jay Lafayette interview Welch on McCain and other business, click on over here. Or click the "play" button on this widget:
