Major Strasser: Are you one of those people who cannot imagine the Russians in their beloved Tblisi?

Rick: It's not particularly my beloved Tblisi.

Heinz: Can you imagine us in Baku?

Rick: When you get there, ask me!

Captain Renault: Hmmh! Diplomatist!

Russia invades Georgia. The Us rattles its sabres. Poland agrees to missile sites. Sounds bad doesn't it?

The response; Oil prices tumble. The stock market surges. The US dollar performs better than expected. Gold hits a 12 year low.

I've always felt that Reagan did the west a terrible disservice by pushing the USSR toward its collapse. We used to have one enemy, now we have nothing but enemies, including plenty within our borders.

Its time to step back and let Europe meet its destiny. Our meddling has created more problems than its ever solved. Maybe a new Soviet style regime could do more to slow down the Islamic hordes than our politically retarded pseudodemocracy models. Besides, they need Canadian technology to develop their oilfields, so we have an opportunity to profit from a strong Russia. It's certainly no worse than dealing with a brutal regime like Saudi Arabia.

"Its time to step back and let Europe meet its destiny."

Gorbechev had the right plan for Russia to ease gradually into a democracy. He had a friendly relationship with the Western Democracies and the US and Reagan in particular. At this point it's a crap shoot, who knows where it will go? Putin certainly does look like one sneaky dude, he has furtive written on his face, wouldn't trust him under any circumstances. He's lurking in the shadows, pulling the strings.

It doesn't seem right to interfere with European Nations on the face of it but sitting back and allowing brute force against a tiny province tending it's own business is wrong.
We have to remember our history and who were responsible for our two world wars. Interfering is in our own best interests as well as the safety of the world.

Terrorism may take more drastic measures, normal defenses don't work with whole nations of people who are radicalized. Stopping immigration from known hotbeds of terrorism would be a common sense approach, first we'd have to find some common sense.

I agree with dp on this one, although not for all the same reasons. It is time for the Europeans to save themselves without our help. The fact that we saved them during two world wars has earned us nothing but ingratitude, envy and hatred. Russia, as much as one may not like what she is doing, is NOT Nazi Germany nor imperialist Japan. Nor is she a world threat like Islamic fascism.

I vote (for what it is worth)for not wasting/spending Canadian and American dollars on the Europeans this time round.

Actually Alain those are pretty well the same reasons as mine.

dp: We have never had but one enemy.

I can't believe what I'm hearing "let Russia help Europe meet its fate". With Russia in the saddle, the terrorists, Iranians, Red Chinese, will all have fingers in the pie. Russia being their supplier will only end up auctioning off Europe to the Abduls. What Nihilistic crap!

Gorbie was a commie who never imagined that he would help the Soviet Union fall - always remember that. He was loved by the liberal left as he was seen as a REFORMER not a destroyer of communism.

Well Conrad, I wager that Russia is much more capable of dealing effectively with the Islamists that the wimpy West of to-day. Also, I am unaware of the Americans being appointed the world's police force.

Putin and the Russians are in catch up mode with their military. The generals are doing a happy dance. I will no longer take a Russian outside of Russia for face value. In Estonia last year they used Russian Estonians to forment violence over moving a Russian war statue. And now used to excuse an invasion of Georgia. Welcome to the evil empire.

An Alain, how well has Putin done to protect his citizens. What about the blowback of arming Iran? Geez, brillaint. Or the mess they made out of Beslen. Or the callous massacre of the Chechnyans which helped bring in the Moslem terrorists.

Faramir, I never said nor claimed that Russia is without faults or problems, nor that I am in agreement with the present Russian regime. However, I have difficulty believing that you see Putin as the same world danger as Hitler. That said I maintain that we must hold the Europeans (understand EU) responsible for looking after their own problems and pay the cost. Furthermore, it is because of the fact that Russia has not sold her soul to the multiculturalists and political correct crowd, that she can deal more effectively with the Islamists than the West. The Islamists understand power and strength while they see, rightly so, the West as weak. When you have the American State Department advising not to use jihad in connection with Islamist terrorism, you do have a serious problem. We are the ones who refuse to name or identify the enemy, not the Russians.

Please get your facts straight concerning the Chechnyans. The Russians responded to Islamic terrorism, not the other way around.

Alain, at one time I would take the Russian's side against terrorist Chechnyans - but no more. For all I care the Chechnyans can pull off another Beslen. The Russian pigs are using whatever pretense they can to oppress the non-Russian peoples, inclusing my grandmother's people, the Estonians. The Russians use their little brownshirt groups in those countries to forment violence. I don't know if we can even trust Russians here in Canada. Putin has shown a real callous disregard for his own people by arming the Iranians, who, duh, will arm the Chechnyans. And yes, I see Putin as the same threat Hitler was. The pattern is the same. Destroy freedom of the press. Check. Use the arm of the state to prevent others from running for office - which they did to Kasporov. Check. Set up a pupper president and maintain power - well, what Hitler did was merge 2 offices into one. But close enough.

His generals are estatic. They want the Cold War back on.

I agree we are weak in our response to the Islamics, but we got our eye off the ball as to who was a greater threat. And that is a 180 change for me to regard China and Russia as a greater threat than Islamic terrorism.
