The myth of the by-election
Nothing sets prognosticators a-flutter like by-elections (or as we call them down here, special elections). The one for former House Speaker Dennis Hastert's is a typical one in which the winners (the Dems) see glorious November victories.
Trouble is, it just ain't so.

Whether this victory is predictive of future Democratic victories depends of what issues were at play. Did voters punish the Republican candidate for the war? Do they think the Republicans have mishandled the economy? Or was this just a "good" candidate with name recognition who ran a good campaign? There is so much political analysis which is just sound and fury. I'd be curious to know why Chandler won.
