Angus Reid poll on Nafta-gate
Canadians think Obama leaks impacted the credibility of the federal government
Two-in-five believe the leaks were executed intentionally, and 47% call for an inquiry
[VANCOUVER – Mar. 10, 2008] – Canadian adults appear disappointed with the reports of leaked conversations between Canadian government officials and advisers of U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate Barack Obama, and are prone to believe that the leaks were executed intentionally, a new Angus Reid Strategies poll has found.
KEY FINDINGS:
» 49% believe the leaks have greatly or moderately impacted the credibility of the Canadian government
» 47% call for an inquiry over the leaks
» 39% think the leaks were executed intentionally by Canadian government officials
» 37% think the leaks have impacted the U.S. presidential race
The so-called NAFTA-gate refers to three separate leaks: a Feb. 26 remark by Ian Brodie, Harper’s chief of staff, who alleged that U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton was kidding about renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA); a report by CTV claiming that Obama’s campaign had told Canada that his attacks on NAFTA were not serious; and a Canadian diplomatic memo obtained by the Associated Press, which cites Obama’s economic adviser Austan Goolsbee saying to Canada’s consul-general in Chicago, Georges Rioux, that Obama’s statements about NAFTA "should be viewed as more about political positioning than a clear articulation of policy plans."

It's interesting that despite negative media attention, more than half of Canadians DON'T think this issue has hurt the credibility of the government, DON'T want an inquiry, DON'T think the leaks were intentional, and DON'T think the leaks will have an impact on the US election. The findings of this poll sound very different when reported this way. Don't they?

"39% think the leaks were executed intentionally by Canadian government officials"
Sure, that's how many Liberal votes there are in Canada right now.

"39%. Sure, that's how many Liberal votes there are in Canada right now."
Yep. And if you had video of Steppy Deyawn buying drugs at a school yard, and having sex with an underage person, that number might drop to 30%
That's how intelligent and irrelevant many Canadian voters are these days.
Influence the American election?
How typically pathetic, and oh so Canadian.

It amazes me how many smug Canadians consider us to be superior to Americans for no other reason than the accident of birth.
Yet some faint at the thought of having any kind of an effect on their relection. OH, just politics as usual.

Why should any goverment lie about something. Especially Obama who is running on a LIE. We want the truth and if the NEWS is the only way i want more of the TRUTH.

WINK WINK Obama finds out what real news reporting is all about in Canada. Keep up the good work Cananda with the excellent news coverage about Obama the FRAUD.

Obama WINK WINK is a fraud. If only American news was as good as Canadian news in reporting Obama and his many lies and scandals. Instead American news all act like the ObamaGirl.

Excellent point, amy. How exactly is the US electorate served by Canada sitting on a major policy matter? US voters should know what the Democratic candidates really think of NAFTA.

OK, so Obama doesn't understand economics. Or maybe he does and is lying to Americans. Sounds like he will win the nomination to me. And no wonder the Canadian media seem so in love with him.
If this was Bush instead of Obama, I think the MSM would be up in arms about it, rather than the source of the leak.
Anyway, why this isn't a story about Obama and free trade instead of a "leak" is revealing.
