Hickory Dickory Debt
"The hours of folly are measured by the clock, but of wisdom no clock can measure. . " William Blake might get a kick out of this year's addition to the Newfoundland and Labrador budget consultations – a clock that reminds residents and participants that the folly of past governments has a definite price. The clock ticks at about $1,400 per minute showing how much the government must pay because of the province's debt.
It's a good idea. More governments should look at this. Perhaps then there'd be more submissions proposing the budgetary equivalent of a flux capacitor to roll back the clock – aggressive spending cuts and limits coupled with legislated debt reduction.

I always like to remind Canadians that for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, Confederation is an event from living memory. The Canadian-born political culture of big taxing government only showed up afterwards. If just another 3,495 or so of us had voted the other way, things would have been considerably different. Freedom in the blood for most of us Newfoundland patriots. There's more of us than you might think. ;-)

Freedom in the blood? If only more Canadians were from Newfoundland...

Liam: I am originally from Nova Scotia. (My first 19 years) I know from a lifetime of experience that there aren't many of "us" back east. Even some of us who are now in the west, still cling to the welfare state mentality. That much is clear from the voting patterns in federal elections from the maritimes and Nfld.
