Canada not enforcing its own laws against terror

Hezbollah is recognized as a terror organization by Canada, and is strictly prohibited. Well, maybe not strictly...

A billboard in Windsor, Ontario

Printed in English on the left side of the billboard are the words: "Lebanese and Arab communities in Windsor city congratulate the Lebanese people for their steadfastness and endeavor to establish peace in Lebanon."

But Nabbout said that Arabic writing which appears on the right side of the billboard does not match the English translation. According to Nabbout, the Arabic writing makes a reference to fighting.

"What they mean by 'fight' is basically 'guerrilla' - using arms and weapons," Nabbout said. "Basically, there is a very specific word... That is a definite difference between the Arabic and the English."

You can contact the Mayor of Windsor, Eddie Francis (The mayor's name is Eddie? Oh Christ. WWII would never have happened if Mr. and Mrs. Hitler had named their son "Skip". You know why? Cause no one takes Skip - or Eddie - very seriously.) here:

Put it on ice

Globe and Mail: Canada steps up fight for the Arctic

Another volley has been launched in the battle for the Arctic, with Canada announcing Friday that two new military facilities will be built in the Arctic in a bid to boost its sovereign claim to the fabled Northwest Passage.

Helpful Advice for Terrorists

I am one of those who believe the American government has overreacted to the threat of terrorists. The goal of terrorists is to terrify and horrify us, partly as simple revenge for what they see as our crimes, and partly to get us to change our policies towards them. The best way to thwart them, then, is to not get terrified. To not reward terrorism by closing our open society, or by changing all our policies to please them. As terrorists see they are having little effect, they will abandon the effort and choose other methods  to achieve their aims.

But this post by Freakonomics author Steven Levitt is so unbelievably stupid and glib it boggles the mind. Middle East Forum director Daniel Pipes has written often and eloquently about withholding information in his writing for fear it will aid terrorists, since, we know, Western-based Islamists are often reading the media. Not so Levitt, who offers helpful advice for would-be terrorists. No need to come up with planning on your own, Osama: Levitt will do it for you. Reading him defend it is even worse.

CP: Gunfire in Vancouver restaurant kills two, wounds six; police suspect gangs

Oh, if only we had banned the guns. . . the Chinese Triads would be out of business. David Miller, Dalton McGuinty, Michael Bryant, speak out! On behalf of your western brethren I beseech you, send buttons.

An Alternative to Arms

An interesting piece by Walid Phares lays out some idealistic alternatives to the recent Mideast arms deal:

Ladies and gentlemen. . .

Globe and Mail: PM's hard choices replacing female ministers

As Prime Minister Stephen Harper prepares for a cabinet shuffle next week, he faces a gender-balancing challenge: Two jobs at risk belong to women and his party already suffers a gender gap with voters.

Studies have shown that on average women tend to be more left-wing than men. Why? There's been a few theories thrown around. Here's a couple of Harvard papers--(pdf) Why have women become left-wing? The political gender gap and the decline in marriage. And (pdf) Daughters and Left-Wing Voting (this deals with women and men). My guess is that Harper appointing more women would do little to close this gender gap. So my advice is, ignore it and pick the most competent person.

Cold hard cash cold war

Telegraph: China threatens 'nuclear option' of dollar sales

The Chinese government has begun a concerted campaign of economic threats against the United States, hinting that it may liquidate its vast holding of US treasuries if Washington imposes trade sanctions to force a yuan revaluation.

The only thing new here is that the Chinese are now openly rattling the sabre. Everyone who followed the issue--skeptics of soft diplomacy, that is--believed this was going to happen at some point. Here's an opposing viewpoint from a few days ago in the Boston Herald via the CalTrade Report: "China bashing pointless." And here's an interesting take on the subject from last December by Jerome Corsi in Human Events: Could the Dollar's Collapse Prompt a New Currency?

A Little Horn-Tooting

Writing in the Globe today, Rob Huebert argues that those advocating Western intervention in Darfur have failed to consider the full implications of their demands. Careful readers might notice that this argument appeared in the pages of the Western Standard recently, under the byline of one Jordan Michael Smith. I've often thought JMS to be brilliant.

Big gains, some loss

CBC: Francophones have made big gains since Bill 101: report

Yikes! Repression and discrimination, they seem to work. Except that in the broader picture, one is tempted to ask, if francophones in Quebec have made such big gains, and francophones are the majority, why hasn't there been a trickle-up to the provincial government? Quebec is still a have-not province in the equalization picture, is it not?

German gov't promotes pedophilia

I couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw the original story but it, unfortunately, turned out to be true:

The sad fact is that Home-Schooling is illegal in Germany, and the private Catholic schools have been shut down as "racist" because they don't teach Islamic stuff equally with the Christianity. This leaves no choice for the Christian parents then to allow the public schools to brainwash their children with such sexual perversions. It's indeed a great shame that the same people who brought the world modern physics, Goethe, Schiller, the Jet Engine, Rocketry, modern agriculture through the Haber Process are killing themselves like this.

Europe's own auto-destruct sequence is engaged.
