Liberals: Losing Outremont; Below Greens in St-Hy

Oof! Looks like the "native son" theory pushed by giddy MSM pundits at the conclusion of last year's Liberal convention was dead wrong - Quebecers are hating the Liberals with Dion as leader more than ever! Heading into Monday's three Quebec by-elections, here's the latest polling from Unimarket-La Presse. First, the "safe" Liberal stronghold of Outremont:

NDP 38%, Liberal 32%, Bloc 14%

Next, the small-town riding of Roberval-Lac-Saint-Jean:

Conservative 43% Bloc 37% Liberal 12%

Finally, the absolute kick-in-the-ass, rural/ex-urban Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot:

Bloc 49% Conservative 32% NDP 7% Green 6% Liberal 5%

If the Liberals cannot hold Outremont, and get beaten back to fringe-party status just half an hour's drive east of Montreal, they are an absolutely spent force in Quebec for the forseeable future. Smarter minds than Dion's understand this - and the long knives are coming out. From CTV's story:

Supporters of former leadership rivals Michael Ignatieff and Bob Rae are already unhappy with Dion, he said, although a movement to ouster Dion before the next federal election is unlikely.

Translation: If we can't get him to resign on his own, we'll consider a move to ouster.

Meanwhile, if you want to know precisely why Harper is licking his chops at the possibility of Dion and company voting down the upcoming throne speech and triggering an election, just watch this train wreck of an interview of Steffi by Peter Mansbridge, from last night's The National (well worth the 6:18):

A leader of men, he can never be.

Steffi will not go to Afghanistan because it is too dangerous a place for a coward. Same for Taliban Jack and I the danger may not necessarily be from the enemy.

Re the interview ... Watching a puff like Mansbridge destroy a wimp like Dion is like watching a fist fight at a gay wedding. Completely laughable.

Dion is the only politician with guts and integrity. He kicked Iggy and Rae butt before and he'll do it again if he needs to. btw,I get a kick out of the chickenhawks who want OTHER people to go to Afghanistan to provide security for the Narco-State; why don't they get their butts over there.

Dion... Guts... My eyes are watering, my ribs hurt!! Good one, Bob. I needed a good laugh!!

Well, Bob, using your reasoning, if you aren't over there you don't have the right to comment either.

But, on the other hand, my own reasoning tells me that if my taxes are paying for the troops over there I get to comment even if I'm not.

Democracy and free speech, how I love them.

"Dion kicked Iggy and Rae butt" says Bob. No Dion isn't the one who did the kicking, it was King-maker Kennedy who did it for his own personal benefit. Either Rae or Iggy would have put Kennedy's ambitions to lead the party much farther back. Dion offers a threat to no one, just himself. Oddly enough another blabber mouth also-ran, Martha Hall-Findlay, supports Dion publicly as well.

Sure looks like the Liberals are up to the same old tactics used in the Chretien/Martin feud. The various tents are set up and smoking. Isn't that what's going on in the Quebec byes?

I see it's the NDP that is set to win Outremount. Still no urban ridings, fairly won outside of Alberta, for Steve!

DeYawn may be the first Lieberal leader to lose his leadership before an election is even called.

And Quebec City is an urban area that has elected Conservatives, despite union thug tactics.
