An inconvenient value
Bruce Allen is a legendy music-biz manager who has guided the likes of Anne Murray, Bryan Adams and Michael Buble to fame and fortune. But the gregarious Allen is perhaps just as famous in the Vancouver area for his daily on-air editorial, Reality Check, on CKNW. His generally conservative, main-street, working-man views are surprising considering the milieu in which he works, and they're certainly a breath of fresh air on a station that has become quite milquetoast in recent years.
Anyway, as you can read in this Vancouver Province story here, and in this biased Wikipedia entry, Allen is in quite a bit of hot water these days over an editorial from earlier this month in which he essentially said that if immigrants to Canada don't like it here they can pack their bags and go back home.
There's now a move afoot to remove Allen from an Olympics committee, on the grounds that his views don't reflect Canadian values. This is rich. For, if a definition for the always elusive "Canadian values" can be found anywhere, it's in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. And that Charter clearly enunciates freedom of speech as a foundational Canadian value. It does not, on the other hand, mandate that we all have to think the same about the manner in which we accommodate immigrants.

I am glad to see this item featured on the Shotgun.
I listen to CKNW when Roy Green or Adler are on in their most tucked away from the larger audience in the evenings and week-ends.
The Milquetoasters have the prime locations, Namely that radical fence sitter Bill 'Do' Good.
Now we Christy Clark 'failed liberal politician' following Good's show providing an "All-Day-Sucker" for the Lefties in the Lower Mainland.
As I can tell so far, Bruce Allen has the vast majority of support on the Email and phone ins. I don't think the over-sensitive and eternally outraged imports are going to win this one.
Allen is not a white supremest nor a bigot or anything like that. He simply says what most of us think on daily every man issues and we are thankful that he is still allowed to speak up in this Canadian Gulag.
And take heart Christy, ... there is something worse than a failed liberal politician ... that would be a successful one.

No different than in the offices of the CBC or any college campus. Say something not "politically correct" and pay the supreme price. Either you will be fired posthaste or you will be ostracized, and life will be made so difficult for you that you'll think of quitting - which is their intent.

Here, here. As a Canadian, I can confirm that his statement does reflect Canadian values in that we welcome those who come here with something to contribute, who respect the rule of law and our traditions and culture and seek to become one of us.
Those who expect and demand that we accept and adapt to their ways are better not to come and to remain at home. Pretty simple and nothing to do with racism.

How would the dictum "freedom of speech" apply to say, a poster on a public media site who refuses to "post" under his/her name but prefers for reasons of sheer cowardice to hide behind some electronic nom
de plume which of course immediately destroys the poster's credibility -here in the real East of Canada we call it, "lack of guts" Globe and Mail has been encouraging posters who are unidentifiable
but post comments which in the normal "Letters To The Editor venue" would leave the Globe responsible for comments which might result in a civil action for libel (a published false statement) The Globe and the Daily Snooze in Halifax NS have been using their "letters sections" to build circulation, but one still cannot buy the Daily News in New Brunswick -but no one cares. The Daily Snooze will eventually collapse as their Quebec based owners continue to get more pissed off with their declining circulation. Red Star would never permit such nonsense.As a senior Editor of the Star remarked to me years ago -no matter what we print, people have to have the rag to get through the day -especially in Toronto the Good as it used to be.

Silly me! I always thought shared values were a result of broad consensus, not what some politican
or special interest group decided they were.
No one but no one is going to try and tell me what my values should be, and I am as Canadian as one can get. Born here, lived here for 61 years and am the product of generations of Canadians, many of whom fought for the freedoms which we Canadians used to enjoy.

Bruce Allen is a dipshit who thinks I actually care about his opinion. And yes, I am a white born and raised Canadian male. HE IS WRONG - laws evolve and CAN be rewritten over time as things evolve. It's about time someone stood up and said exactly what a majority of Canadians think: if you don't play the rules, if you don't want to integrate (which includes learning the language), if you want to recreate the pile of garbage you left behind in the old country, ... then by all means, go back and stay away.

Paul, I agree that Bruce went a bit over the top by singling out certain groups (i.e., those wearing turbans).
Frankly, I am not offended by a turban or a veil -- what I am offended by is attitude (i.e., when immigrants try to shove their traditions and customs down our own throat, but without ever taking responsibility and becoming productive members of society themselves).

i listen to cknw all day six days a week. ever since christy clarke's show replaced adler the station went from the slippery slope right into the chasm of puffball "journalism". bill used to be good to a certain extent but now he's also gone completly politically correct on most topics. i look forward all morning for bruce allen's two minute rant just to shake the cobwebs out of my head from the numbing boredom that sets in from listening to pap for hours on end.

Well, paul, it wasn't all that clear and yes, I do read and have a fairly good command of languages.
Stereotyping is not exactly an accurate science, we are much more complex beings. However, when we follow certain political bents strongly in one direction we get labeled. So what?
Why are those who we label as Lefties get so upset?
Like most who post here, I tend to be Right leaning, make no apologies and the label doesn't offend me. Neocon and Redneck is a probably meant to be more on the derogatory side, we can handle it. Lefties should be able to as well.

In fact, Marx wrote to Darwin to ask him to write a foreword since Marx's writings were inspired by the first scientific fraud, the theory of evolution.
The second, of course, is global warming, which uses exactly the same tactics ... most scientists accept the theory, blah, blah, blah.
Notice none of them say it's a scientific fact, because neither theory can stand up to scientific scrutiny.
If you'd care to debate the science of what inspires your faulty conclusions, I would be glad to carry on an intellectual debate with you.

bruce and his kind are a dying breed. the 'New' Canada is only just starting to assert itself. why should immigrants "assimilate"? Canada doesn't have any requirement that they do so. If Canadians really wanted immigrants to "fit in", then they'd pass laws to make it a requirement.
As it stands you don't even need to speak english or french in this country to make a go of it in Toronto or Vancouver at least. You could speak only one of about a dozen languages from birth to death without skipping a beat in terms of going to school, getting a job, driver's license, using public services, etc....
So all the 'old breed' Canadians should get with the program and start to 'fit in' with the immigrants or maybe like bruce said, they can go back to a place called 'home'. But wait, the place their ancestors called 'home', is also overrun by 'immigrants'. Oh well, it's too late now. say goodbye to your old world, welcome to the new.
