Buying Time

It does not matter what the immediate reaction is to Martin's speech. Memories are short. For those who may have been persuaded to give him the benefit of the doubt - there is plenty more to come at Gomery, and new revelations of corruption will now be placed against the backdrop of a worried, weak Prime Minister pleading for time.

There are two words that can replace "wait for Gomery" with a sense of visceral urgency, and they should be used by the opposition benches as early and as often as possible. Those two words are paper shredders.

"Canadians cannot afford the luxury of leaving this government in control of the paper shredders.

Have to call an election now, it's to risky to wait. Gomery will be squashed shortly by the Libranos, MP's and judges.

Paul Martin, virtuoso of the ditherydoo, does not deserve anymore time to dither and do nothing. Even without the dreadful scandals being revealed with every passing day, his government does not deserve to continue frittering away our time and money with no discernable benefit to the country. I still stick to my prediction of an election on 27 June 05.

The best argument I have yet heard on the matter. Kate, it may be too late already. What are the odds that any of the paper-shredder operators will be found to have participated in a conspiracy to obstruct justice?
